Tire and wheel width
Ok at what point is it bad to go further on a certain wheel as far as handling is concerned? Take for example a 17x11 wheel, you can put 275/40/17 tires on and have from what ive read so far a stiffer tire that has a more desirable sidewall angle in hard corners, or a 315/35/17 which is just a damn fat tire with a big contact patch. Which is better, should you just slap as much meat on the wheel as it will handle or keep the tire closer to the width of the wheel or somewhere in between??

I really dont want to get into a pissing match with others and ambush your thread with bickering like the other thread but here is my opinion...
I understand the thinking that you should use as wide a wheel as possible. BUT the 11" wheel is the recommended wheel for a 315 tire.
And finally I am all about competing in SCCA solo 2. And I deal with plenty of guys who also do. And no one fast uses the 275's any more. They all went to 315's. Why? Because they are faster. Really simple.

Look at the tire MFG wheel specification for the tire, there will be a minimum and a maximum, I would just prefer to be somewhere in the middle, a compromise.
16x8" wheel is common and you will find plenty of people running a 245, as an example, a competitive racer I know ran a 245 on a 9" wheel, and now runs a 275 on a 10" wheel.
I think Alan summarized it best if you look for the quoted text in the other thread, look at the purpose of the car and go from there.
