Tire question Auto X

I am looking for a second set of tires for my 99 SS to auto x in. I need these to be as cheap as possible and was just wondering what you guys would suggest for real cheap. I don't plan to compete any for the time being. For now I will be more interested in learning and will be fine competing against my self. So losing a little time is not too big of a deal. Also has anyone ever installed some kind of temporary in car camera in a stock interior?

Thanks
Adam

Hi Adam, I like the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 for an everyday tire - they are priced great at the Tire Rack. They are not the stickiest, however, you are learing and they will be cheap to replace once you do wear them out. I was doing Street tire class autox with them and having a good time!

As far as the in car cam goes, there are some harness bars made that can handle a camera and make possible the use of a five pt belt system.

Over the years I've established a pretty good relationship with a local tire shop here. I bought tires from Tire Rack and had the tire shop mount them. They told me they could have got the same tires from Tire Rack, had them shipped to the shop, and saved me a couple bucks. So check with a local shop and see if they can order from Tire Rack. Otherwise just have them shipped to the shop yourself (with the shop's permission of course).

If you're gonna run stock just get tires with a low treadware rating for softer rubber compound. If you have mods you'll be in prepared class. Then you'll have to decide if you want street or race tires. Kumho Victoracers are pretty much the cheapest way to go for race compound tires.

Look for close out deals on Tire Rack and you might find a great deal. I got a set of 16" Yokohama AVS Intermediates for my SS about a year ago for $59 each. They lasted a full year and still have just enough tread left that I can use them for rain tires.

for wheels, they are always posted for sale on this and the other forum

I have a set of four Revolution wheels, 16 x 8, silver painted, five spoke with the very desired ¼” offset (widens the track and gives tire clearance in rear). These are the traditional Revolution style.

See here -- http://www.revolutionwheels.com/ (like the style on the far right of the home page except the shoulders are more square).

Straight and true, some minor cosmetic dings but nothing serious. Sorry, no digital camera. $250. If interested, let’s talk about face to face exchange. I'm in DFW area

My vote's for the Tire Rack. I save a bundle on the state tax here in CA. They have a warehouse in Nevada, and if the tires are in stock there I get them the next day being in Northern CA.

Hmm how big of a deal would it be to go form a 17x9 to a 16x8? I know they will fit just fine but I mean performance wise. Some day when it comes time to go for time will I need to get a new set of bigger wheels. Or would the difference be small enough not to notice? I had not even thought of moving to the 16in wheel. I had assumed that I would be staying with the 17. Also would the computer have any problem switching between the two without changing it?
Thanks
Adam

As long as you have the same diameter tire at all four courners the computer won't have a clue that the wheels have been changed.

16's just give you a little more sidewall. That's good for drag style launches but less sidewall is probably better in an autocross road race situation. Having said that, I run 16's exclusively when I race. 17's are for the street.

Ya I think I will go with the 16s everything for them is much cheaper. I found a local guy selling a set of 16x8 that have tires on them for 250 so I think I will try those. The only problem is the backs have nittos on them. How will they perform at on auto x with street tires on the front. I am guessing I will have an under steer problem?
Thanks
Adam

Vette wheels, cheap + grip. Look for either 16x9.6" or 17x9.5", the ZR1 style will cost more, the "ugly" stuff is cheap and fits the bill quite nicely I think.

If you want tires that will last awhile, maybe you should look at ~160 or so treadwear, although if this is only for AutoX your not exactly putting alot of miles on the car, so maybe a 40-60 would suit you fine.
