Post How do i reduce wheelspin coming out of turns?

I have a 95 Formula I race W2W. My inner rear tire tends to spin when I press on the gas coming out of a turn or if I go over a hump in the road on a turn. Suspension is all stock (becuse I'm in a stock class).

I am running fresh Hoosier 275/45/16 R3S03 tires. Rears are at 29 lbs cold. I am thinking to drop it a lb or 2. I'm running Redline NS diffferential fluid with no additive.

Any reasons/suggestions? Right now, i have to let off the gas, but it bugs me because the car behind me (AS Mustang) is catching up in any of the turns my wheels spin. LOL, one tapped my bumper one time. Of course, my car isn't supposed to be in front of them, anyway, class wise, but thats too bad, so sad for them. But still, I need to do something to improve the situation if I can...

ideas?

Bob, you are a lead foot! All joking aside, ther's not much you can do besides feathering the throttle. The stock limited slip is useless for this type of driving, although you may be able to shim it up tighter.

I don't know how old your stock limited-slip is, but a fresh one would probably help. Would a Torsen be legal in your class? It'll do a much better job of torque biasing in corners than the stock Auburn (even a fresh one).

It's probably not legal to do so, but dropping the rear control arm pivot should help the rear end hook up better on the gas, at the expense of a bit less traction under braking.

Rear shocks with a bit less compression damping could also help. You mentioned that you're loosing traction when cresting bumps, so a bit more rebound damping may be in order. I'm sure you're limited on shock choice, so changing to fresh ones (if your current ones are a bit worn) will help with the rebound situation but not with compression - guess it depends which has a greater positive effect on lap times.

Good luck!

Even if you run a synthetic in your rear end you still need to put the limited slip additive in.

Do you even have a limited slip? How fresh are your shocks? When I raced SS, I replaced mine at the beginning of each year.

You could try going a bit slower coming in (probably the same braking point, but staying on the brake a trifle longer, trail braking down to the apex), take a later apex, and accelerate more in a straight line.

I road race a '94 Z28 1LE and my stock Auburn LSD didn't last long either. I replaced mine with a take-off OEM Torsen a couple years ago and it is still working great. No more problems laying down the power for me.

I race ITE, not sure but I'd think you could update to a OEM Torsen. Even with questionable rules, Who'd be the wiser if you did it anyway.

Bob, I have to give you credit. I have never come across someone in a stock class that is as honest as you seem to be. It has been my experience that the guys in stock classes like to push the rules as much as possible. Some, I have heard, go as far as to replace all their bushings with black poly ones and replace sways. soooooo, good on ya!

p.s. If you know, could you tell me the finishing order of ASR at Grattan? I am curious how far behind I fell in pints. I wasnt there due to a lean condition that developed and was robbing me of ~100 hp above 4700rpm......I thought it felt sluggish

Adam,

Its especially tough when I have a couple thousand dollars worth of stuff that would "fix it all" sitting within 30 ft of me as I type. Once all this year's competitors in SSGT are mathematically eliminated and my 16" tires are shot, I'll probably change the markings and start installing ITGT parts. I lapped my competition 2 times the last time we met, so I'm trying not to risk protests, and basically only tweaking and fixing broke things. I seem to be racing other cars instead of the one thats been showing up in my class. I've noticed already a couple AGS and ITGT people saying my car is real fast (due to the 350), and hope it isn't a predictor for trouble in ITGT.

Maybe its better I learn to tweak the setups anyway, so my mod money isn't wasted.

At Grattan I think the Blue BMW won one day, but the finish sheet I got was for the wrong race group. I suggest putting a post on the MC list to get the ASR info, or email Bill Martin (T & S).

BTW, I broke the SSGT track record by 2 sec in Sat. race and 3 on Sun. RA is next, and I think I have a chance at the record there, too. Its 2:48, set last year by Mike in the Green 95 Firehawk, so I'm way down on HP with my Formula. I'm sitting here practicing driving RA on my PC to get ready. I'll have to drive the **** out of it in the turns to take it away, is my guess. Should be fun.

I hope you have your HP back by then

I have the same problem....

Is replacing the LSD with a tougher one a do it yourself kind of job or would it be wise to take it to somebody??

Take care fellas!

Bob,
You should have no problem beeting my record at RA, I was running on well used tires (they were thrown away by another competitor)
I corded them leaving the carousel. I also had a plugged cat which limited my top speed and I was running panther pads which are made for AX.

With those new tires of yours, you should have no problems.

PS The last rase at grattan my left front rotor was cracked, hence the costing into turn 1.

See you at RA
Mike - Green 01
