I know the SCCA requires (for autocross) a M2000 or Snell95 ratings. For road race the M2000 won't do.

The SA rated helmets have been tested for roll bar impact. The HPDE group I run with allows an M2000 helmet so I'm sure it it just depends what group you run with.

All of the different HPDE groups I run with also allow M2000 rated helmets.

Here's a website i found http://www.smf.org/faqs.html

I heard some motorcycle helmets aren't tested for multiple hits either (like your head bouncing around inside the car)

I have an open face helmet which is nice for AutoX.. I kinda wish I got a closed face helmet though for extra protection. I thnk karting madates closed face helmets.

Most M rated helmets do not have the Nomex liner for fire protection. Some groups will allow you to run M rated helmets if you also wear a Nomex head sock.
