Talking Dr. Mudge you have too much fun

Man,

I am very impressed with your 24oz LS1. Nice fabrication, I am jellous. I can only swap parts Sorry, I missed it, what kind of camaro did you have? A guy I used to work with road raced here in the Detroit area when he "Upgraded" from a Omni GLH (Stock engine) to 3rd gen he took a lot longer to get around the track and was miffed beyond belief.

I have a related question, since I have seen the light I would really like to learn how to properly drive. I do not have money for anything but car payments now, so it would have to be cheap. I am trying to get into a SOLO class soon. Am I going to kill my tires in 2 days of class? (BFG KDWS I ) They have 1/2 tread but I can not afford new ones now. I guess I could run my Lumina Actually, if 1 AutoX would kill tires that is probably what I would do.

Thanks for the schooling

I sure wish I had a project going like that, but no thats not me. There is a local guy with a Y2K LS1/T56 in a 71 240Z, running a 12.07@119 "stock" engine. There are a few others but there are maybe 3 known completed LS1 swaps on the road right now, most are LT1 or even the more common carbed, or L98 cars.

I actually have an 82 Turbo car that I'm going to take the engine out of, but I have some other things to go in as well, a close ratio trans, better clutch/flywheel, etc

You shouldn't kill your tires in 2 days I'd think, but what is the treadwear on those? I seem to remember those as pretty soft, replacements for thier last version of 'race/streetable' tire? With soft tires like that you should need a replacement sort of soon I imagine. If you have the Lumina as a daily driver though, that helps

If your going to drive the car semi often on the street, I'd probably look at tires with treadwear of 160 or greater. Right now as a sort-of replacement for the Yoko AVS Intermediates that I liked, I'd go with the Sumitomo HTR Z. I believe they are a 180 treadwear, they have a WR rated version, and they are cheap just like the old Yokos. If you had the money at some point you might want a true street tire, 220-300 (or even more) treadwear so they last a good long while, and put the sticky tires on your other set of spare wheels. Then I'd be more comfortable going aggressive on the compound choice.

As for your Dodge Omni buddy, its going to take him awhile probably to learn the 3rd gen car. A lighter car though with a decent suspension can make a faster driver out of just about anyone IMO, but an experienced driver who knows thier car should be able to do decent times as well, it just seems tougher in a bigger car, where a little car doesn't take as much work and is less sensative to screw ups. My 240Z gives me all the warning in the world when the rear end starts to go out, it is so easy to control it still amazes me.

As for the Camaro, I still have a 94 Z28, your LS1 prices make me salivate though, but I really wanted to go to a Vette if I got another updated car, although if I were to dump the 94 I also considered a first gen Camaro. I've been wanting one since I nuked my 69 Firebird, something like 5 years back. I am lazy and tired of dealing with smog, even if I were to set it up to easily pass smog, for some reason it bugs me to even have to do it, sounds pathetic I know.

This guy, is my superhero of fabrication, boxed frame and C4 front/rear suspension. Now if I could do that....

This car is going to haul when its done. He is moving faster than other projects as well. Last I heard he is looking for 2000 pounds and about 600-650 HP.

About the prices,Yeah I know the LS1 back east are so cheap.I found this out while on Auto trader looking for my new LS.I'd see a price on one go and realize it was 2,200miles away
I had to pay 13,900 for mine w/ 33K on the od.great condition in&out. in Cali. average Z price is 14,900 up to 16K,for the SS a little higher
I have the KDWs they'll let him know b4 they break.I dont AutoX but I guess the tires dont really have a chance to get all that hot which will take the tread off quick.Open tracking will get them hot enough to gobb/melt the rubber off.But the lower the tread the better the grip IMO,less squirm from the shorter blocks a tighter feel. Z94 I havnt looked yet but NASA may have a region in your area if you want to do some open tracking/hpde schools.

Supposedly SOLO guys see sort of road racer speed, its supposed to be rather like 1 man at a time road racing... But I dont know the real speeds you'll see but that will play a role in wear yep

Dr. Mudge,

My dad had a friend with a 240 Z that he wanted me to buy. He was raving about it but I passed it up. I believe that it was a '79 model all I remember is that it had fuel injection (mechanical I think).

The problem with my SS is that it is pretty much a daily driver 64 miles a day round trip to work. That is why I needed to know if the tires would be ok.

240Z 70-73 (and some 69 cars, only a couple hundred)
260Z 74
280Z 75-79
280ZX/ZXT (injected) 80-83

I dont really like the heavier cars, starting with the 260Z the bumpers and cars start getting heavy. The 280 cars are ugly to me frankly, and they are in the 2700 pound range.
