Post Brake rotor options

I'm running stock LS1 rotors, calipers with PFCM pads up front on my 95Z.

What options do I have for rotors? Anything from GMPP? Aftermarket? I'm trying to compile a good list of available rotor options for our cars. I used LT1 Power Slot rotors in the past for one event, can't really say if they were good or not. I've heard through third parties that people don't care for the Power Slot rotors??? Anyone have opinions on what's good or available for rotors?

I've got a friend with a '00 hard top Vette that warped his stock rotors at the first event he attended. He upgraded to some GMPP aftermarket rotors, supposedly thicker than the OEM's and hasn't had any issues. I tried to find some rotors off of GMPP's site... https://www.spoperformanceparts.com/...tml?CATID=1387 but can't determine if PN#'s 12480041 and 12480042 what application these rotors are intended for or what the specs of these are.

Just trying to find out what options are available.

Thanks

I have Power slots on the front of mine, have auto-x'ed all this year and last two events of last year and I couldn't be happier with them.

KVR blanks up front.. but my brakes lead a pampered life of street driving and occasional Autox.

My next set would probably be Autozone rotors.

Derek,

With the kind of power you have, I imagine your front brakes will be taking a severe beating at whatever road course you go to. I'd seriously consider stepping up to some better front brakes using either the G2 or Bob Bishop version of the C5 brake upgrade at a minimum. I've bought everything I need to upgrade my LT1 brakes to C5 for about $400 by finding some parts used and getting a caliper bracket cheaply.

However, I would bet the Prospeed Porsche front brake system is a better upgrade and would fit your power level very nicely. It's about $1500 I believe.

Seems retail on the PowerSlots is around $120 each. Retail on the KVR's? Not exactly sure which one to go with. They list a 98-02 stock rotor and a "severe duty" rotor. Not sure of the difference. They list the severe duty rotor for $191, not sure if that's per rotor or pair.... I'm thinking per rotor. :/

Mike, I tend to tone the car way down for the road course, lots of timing retard, and short shifting.... 5400 or there abouts. My theory is that an SC application isn't optimal for RR, so I error on the side of caution or conservative if possible. $400 for a C5 upgrade would work within my budget in the future. Hard for me to justify $1500, though it sure would be nice

What are the specs for the LS1 rotors? diameter? new thickness? min thickness?

How does this compare to the C5 rotors?

What differences are there between the LS1 2 piston calipers and the C5 calipers. I'm assuming more than likely the 15x3.5" skinnies up front with the C5 front rotor/caliper setup is a no go?

I'm gonna have to choose one type of racing some day.

What all would I need to go from the 98+ LS1 front brake setup I have now to the C5 setup? just rotors and calipers?

Thanks for all the info guys, I'm really learning a lot form ya'll in a short amount of time.

IMHO Powerslots are WAY over priced. They look cool but I wouldnt pay $120+ ea for them, not when 98+ rotors are available from Autozone for $36ea. At that price you could replace them 4 times for the cost of one Powerslot.

For the money I think Bob Bishop's C5 setup is the way to go unless you're willing to drop $1500 for the Porsche setup. You can get everything NEW from Nashville speed for ~$900.

LS1 rotors are not quite 12", something like 11.8". C5 rotors are about an inch bigger, 12.8" I think. Thickness is comparable.

LS1 Calipers are basically a cheap knock off of C5 calipers. They have a slightly smaller pad and they are not as stiff. You might get away with skinnies if you run spacers, probably want to check with the LS1 guys on that one.

Nashville speed sells a kit with everything needed to upgrade to C5 brakes. Basically you need rotors, calipers, pads, Bob's bracket, and the bracket that holds the pads & caliper. The cool thing about his kit is since you can use LT1 spindles (unlike the LG kit) so you can sell the entire LS1 setup to recover some of the cost.

If you are gonna stay with stock LS1 set-up, you just cannot beat the Autozone rotors. They are $40 each and last amazingly well. I've cracked KVR blanks, but have yet to crack an Aimco (Autozone).

As for the C5 kit, the C5 calipers are pressure cast as opposed to gravity cast. Makes for fewer or smaller voids. The C5 calipers also have ribbing that runs along the top of the caliper for reinforcement. They are wider that the F-Body caliper to accomodate a 1/4 wider C5 rotor. The caliper will work in your stock F-Body frame, allowing you to use F-Body pads. However, without the wider C5 rotor, the pistons in the caliper will extend WAY out there.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

As far as which C5 kit to go with, the Bishop kit is a nice one and is engineered similar to the BAER GTP kit. It attaches the all steel bracket to the back side of the hub and extends over to align with the rotor. So, there is some torsional loading on the bracket.

The LG kit attaches at the stock points with an aircraft aluminum bracket, keeping the stock geometry along the attachment points, therefore the loading is along the factory designed plane. It does rotate the caliper down about 1/2", though.

Which is better? Both kits have their positives and negatives.

I run the LG kit because I have a good relationship with LG Motorsports. I run a lot of Lou's parts and he in turn gives me a LOT of driving tips and coaching on suspension set-up. But that's not because I'm special, it's because I asked.

Lou is a long-time racer, a 3 time World Challenge Champion driving a 4th gen F-Body. So, he knows these cars, their capabilities and their inherent weaknesses. That can't be purchased.

FYI I only paid 75 bucks a piece for my front power slots.
