Bleeding PS, adding a cooler ?'s

How does everyone on here bleed their power steering system? I want to make sure that I don't get any air bubbles in the system or get any that may be in the system now out of the system. What is the best power steering cooler to get? The top of my PS reservior always has some fluid on it, so I think it may be getting hot, that would cause this, right? A new cap didnt help.

Any power steering cooler is better than none. Summit sells one for like $30.

Yes, fluid around the cap is an indication that the pressure is rising due to heat. The cap has a spring in it and is designed to "blow off" above a given pressure to assure that you don't blow out the lines, etc when pressure builds.

One approach that is easy and cheap is to buy two or three quarts of Red Line Power Steeering fluid and over time change over to it. Try this as an alternate to installing a cooler and see if it solves your problem.

With the car not running, get a turkey baster (can get at a bigger grocery store) and suck the contents of the reservior out until you can't get any more out of it. Then replenish with Red Line. Drive the car for a day, or week, whatever and repeat. Do this until the fluid is Red... This approach will also avoid any concerns about air in the system.

I did this all the time on my old LS1 and usually did it between runs during track days... That car used to coat the underside of the hood and the engine bay. This helped some, but I eventually blew out the seal behind the pulley and had to replace the pump because of the dumb design of the LS1 pump.

Are you tracking this car? If not, I recommend that you try the Red Line and see if this does the trick.

Don't go with too big of a cooler. It will add restriction and burn up your pump. I had metal in my reservoir which went away when I disconnected my cooler at Sam's recommendation. I'm either going to add a smaller stacked plate cooler or wait and see if someone adapts the turn one pump to LT1 cars.

Absolutely NO power steering problems since my Turn One pump and pulley was installed.

And I abandoned my rail type cooler for a factory in-line cooler. After a couple of years, the rail type began leaking at the barb connections.

Being a pump and not a "sealed system", there is not really any bleeding involved. "Fill resovoir, start car" will usually suffice.

Is anyone aside from me just running a factory LS1 cooler? I neve rhave any problems with boiling of fluid and it more or less bolts right in to the LT1 with a little modification to the radator hose.

I've got one to install. Just taking a rest after the LT's. Which hose did you install the cooler in?

Lower radator, goes to the mid-lower driver side on the radator. I just cut out the center section of the hose. It fit almost perfectly with the modeled ends on it.
