beginner question

i was thinking about the road racing thing, and my question is, if you already have the car, how much is an average amount of money that is spent in a year?

it depends what you do, how often, where, and with what. the answer might be $300 for autocross, or $10,000 to run w2w.

if you have a small car with low power, it will be cheaper, but less exciting, imho, but still lots of fun

find the tracks in your area and find out who runs on them, then arrange to go and be a course worker or guest or something...

It costs me about $400 per race, which includes tire wear, brake pads, gas, entry fee, food. I don't count the intangibles like broken parts, crashes. A smaller car will not wear things out as fast.

i'm like 17 and it looks fun, i enjoy taking turns and such alot more than drag racing, and i figure that for my next car i will just get something like an 80's model car like an rx7 or 300zx or supra and race it, just so that i can get experienced, like i said before though, it looks really fun

When you say road racing, there are all types of realms... Most of the guys here autocross. I do the Open Road Races in Nevada. For 90 miles of highway using both lanes (including oncoming), the Nevada Highway Patrol blocks off the highways and we run in our class. There is a 98 Camaro in the Unlimited Class that runs the 90 miles at 200 MPH - Todd Carpenter, don't get on his bad side. The rest of us run in a time/distance rally in classes from 95 MPH to 180 MPH.

To run in the Open Road Races, each race is $450-$700. You'll need transport and hotel in Nevada. Plus, fresh fluids and some guys in the extreme classes run new tires on each run. I've seen some tire pressure sensors for sale at the Tire Rack that will monitor pressure to let you know if a tire is going down before you tumble into the weeds. Each weekend can be reasonable depending on what you want to do.
