auto in autoxing

I was thinking about getting into autox, but I don't know how well my a4 would react to autoxing. I was thinking if I manually shifted it it would be okay. I just thought I'ld ask you guys and see what you think. I know the m6 is better suited for these situations, but I gotta try to work with what I got. I just don't want the computer to decide I need a different gear than I think and it shifts and sends me spinning out of control.

Thanks for any input.

Because of the speeds in autocross, the auto isn't as much as a disadvantage as people think. I used to autocross my 88 L98 IROC A4 and the biggest problem was me, not the car. As I learned and also made the proper modifications, the car became competitive. ...I am pretty sure 2 of the top 5 at the 2003 Nationals in FS were auto's.

Depending on your rear end gearing and the course layout, you may find that on some courses, you can run in 1st the whole time... When this wasn't the case, I learned over time that I needed to manually do the first 1-2 upshift, then I just left it in 2nd for the remainder of the run. My old 'ROC had the 2.77 rear end.

Over the years I've autocrossed three different F-Body's that were automatics. I won the SE Division Championship in a 1970 Firebird with a TH400 in C Prepared.

I love it. I drive with two feet, one over the brake, one on the gas. I do wish I could get a ratchet shifter for my '94's A4 but it doesn't seem that anyone makes one. Remind me to call B&M...

Toward the end of last season my transmission was acting up and I had to leave it in drive (OD) and autocross it that way. Even that wasn't as bad as I would have imagined. While I'm sure I wasn't as fast as I might be, it wasn't slow.
