Z28 foglight upgrade question

ok, i put a set of APC foglights in my Z28 cause i hated the factory lighting and my factory foglights were destroyed when i bought the car... so i got these and they were doing great for awhile, but i run with em on a lot and after about 3 months first bulb blew.. 2 months later the next one did, now ive got a set of 100watt bulbs for the fogs and was just wanderin if anything other than the harness needs to be changed for the higher wattage bulbs (the 55 watts were good light and a good white color too but i just HATE not being able to see on the back roads around here) oh and is anyone selling a driver side foglight mounting bracket mines bent =/ ah and the year probly wouldnt hurt to be mentioned.. 94 Z28 lol

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

Use a different harness, and add in a 30amp relay, and you should be golden as far as the wattage - but - my first question is - what are the APC housing's made from?

If they aren't a 2 part design at least with the inner part being metal/glass, then you are gonna melt them pretty quick. A light is only as good as the housing it is in.

Surpisingly - Pilot has some such mentioned housings - good price, and good material. I ran 130w H3's in a set with no problems in a set of Pilot housings.

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

ok its been a long time since i posted this but my foglights just started giving me trouble again, is there a way i can keep the factory wiring and just upgrade the relay and fuse to run the 100 watts.. and yes the apc lights have a strong rubber backing to run the wires out with a metal case and hard plexiglass front i think, its thick either way, i definately think i need to change the switch cause it seems everytime i cut these off they dont work when i cut em back on =/ last time i cut em off was 2 days ago, and they have yet to come back on...and it was just recently i finally changed to the 100 watts and had forgotten about the harness stuff by now, so what do i need to do, and anyone have a wiring diagram of what all i need to change from teh factory wiring to run 100 watt foglights?

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

Use existing fog lamp wire to activate 30A relay (remember other side of relay coil goes to ground). Wire power side of relay to battery through 25A fuse ang 12awg wire. Use 12awg wire on the light side of relay to both lights. Will have no probs with 100w bulbs.

To use the existing relay, the wiring from the relay to the foglights needs to be upgraded to heavier wire as does the power from battery to relay. I recommend 12awg, I think stock is 16awg. Also run 2 wires from relay terminal to fogs instead of 1 wire then splitting into 2. Not sure what the factory relay is rated at so take it in to a autoparts store and get one with matching terminal out rated at least 30A contacts. You should be good to go.

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

ok the wiring then.. already upgraded to a 30a relay and 30a fuse.. so 12(awg is that the same as gauage?) to therelay and foglights.. so what about the switch.. or better yet what sounds like it would cause this problem...

foglights work fine if i leave the switch on.. if i start to use the switch cut em off and then back on anytime.. next time i try to use em they dont come on.. last time they stayed off for a week and came back on last night ... any idea wth would cause that ... im at a loss which is why rewiring the whole thing sounds very good! ... thx for the tip though ill rewire the power here in a day or so

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

Yeah, awg means guage.

The contacts in the switch could be getting bad and not making good connection after shutting switch off. Check with multimeter (resistance should be at or very close to 0 ohms with switch on) and get new switch if bad. Or just try a new switch. The same with the relay and it's socket. The wiring gauge should get upgraded soon. Not sure what else to suggest

Re: Z28 foglight upgrade question

guess all thats left is the wiring then, i just got a new switch 2 weeks ago, fixed the problem for about 4 days.. may be the connections themselves though, its wierd, relay doesnt kick on or anything when they quit, almost like teh switch isnt even getting power but the light comes on on it, so it should be getting power right? .. thanks for all the help though.
