Washing Machine turned steering wheel part!

My friend picked this up out of a washing machine that was headed to the crusher. Decided it would be his new custom steering wheel!
Its one of the pulleys(?) that the belt turns to spin dry your clothes.
Not really my thing, but you gotta admit its cool knowing what it came from!
He had me wire-wheel it to make it kinda shiny then powdercoat clear on top of it.
Check it out:

BLING BLING!!

Re: Washing Machine turned steering wheel part!

Pretty cool. But I think it needs some black paint, or a steering wheel cover around the outside. Looks like it could cut you now or something. Also, would be a PITA to drive when the car has been sitting in the sun for hours in the summer, and the steering wheel gets red hot. But I like the spokes. Though, it might also look more steering wheel like if you guys were to cut the top one, and leave it a four spoke.

Re: Washing Machine turned steering wheel part!

He actually wanted it powdercoated gloss black at first, but when i started cleaning up some casting marks on it he saw that it got shiny where I was using the wire wheel and decided he wanted the whole thing like that.

He was talking about maybe getting foam or something to go around it and then put a cover over top of that, so it would grip more like a normal steering wheel.

Ill mention cutting the top spoke out, that would look pretty cool now that ya mention it

Sweet. Sounds like it would be a nice set up. Post some more pics if he does anything else to it. I wanna see it.

LOL, is his car being raced in 24 hours of LeMons? That's the first thing I thought.

Is that thing safe? And how does it feel in your hands? Looks like it would be uncomfortable to drive. I remember one time when I was growing up, one of the neighbor kid's dad was a semi mechanic. One day he brought one of those huge semi steering wheels home & mounted it to the kid's bike. It was pretty funny watching him try to ride it around!! The steering wheel was as big as him.

The thing is real sturdy, guess it wold have to be to spin a bunch of wet clothes around

Personally, I would wrap the wheel with something, or try to make it padded like most steering wheels are. Its not uncomfortable, but it is kinda strange feeling I think anyway.

The semi truck steering wheel on the kids bike would be hilarious lol Wish I coulda' seen that!

As far as I know, no plans for attending the 24-hour LeMons race :-)

Re: Washing Machine turned steering wheel part!

I havent driven his car with it on there, but he says its comfortable for him. He likes the way it grips as-is.
I know it looks huge in the pics, but its actually the same size as the stock steering wheel so i imagine leg room wouldnt have changed.

km9v--the airbag is hidden inside that nut in the center

My friend with the steering wheel made an account on here, he is Modifiedz28

Pretty cool looking and awesome ingenuity, however that's gonna hurt like hell if he ever get's in a wreck and I also doubt it will pass state inspection.
