Want to Paint Calipers, Help Please

I want to paint my calipers because I think it would look really neat. Any suggestions on how to do it. I want to paint the caliper itself orange, because thats the color of the car. And Then I want to paint the mounting bracket black. Any ideas on the best way to do this?

I was thinking automotive primer, then the paint, and then a high temp clear coat. I'm not sure if I can even find a high temp clear coat though Any tips on where to find decent paint?

Also, any tips on how to paint them, or what not to paint would be nice. And one more thing, if I clamp the brake line, and take off the caliper to paint it, do I have to bleed the brakes after I put the caliper back on?

Thanks!!

I did it the easy way and got a bunch of plastic bags and tapped them around the brakes, then just used high temp engine paint to paint them, and thats it, so far they lasted a 9 months and still look good.

I am going to powdercoat mine. I would guess it would be around 30 bucks for all four. I hate taping stuff off. Its really easier to take the hole caliper off and have it blasted and coated. It will last forever.

I was thinking powdercoat too. Do you have to tape off the parts of the caliper that you dont want painted before you take it in to get it powder coated, or will they do it for you?

Most should tape it for you. The powdercoating guy in my town is a car nut so he does car parts right. He sandplast the parts, washes it, mask all holes and gasket mating surfaces, throws down several coats and then puts it in the oven. It's nice to pull off an oily part, throw it in the back of the truck and pick it up two days later all nice and pretty. He is charging me 45.00 to do all this to my intake right now. It's not expensive at all considering the time involve and the durablity of the finish.

I looked into the powdercoating idea but the $ I was quoted for all four was WELL over the above mentioned amounts. I'd say if you can get them coated for +/-$30 do it. I can't remember exactly what I was quoted but it was like 40ea.
I used the G2 paint. It covers nice and still looks great.

When I took the rotors off to have them turned I just put the calipers back on w/o the pads. The G2 kit comes w/ a can of brake cleaner and a brush but I bought like three extra cans of brake cleaner and several cheap brushes of various sizes. The prep work is supposed to be critical so I wanted to make sure that they were clean as could be. I used the brake clean spray along w/ wire brushes to get all of the grease, dust, etc. off of the caliper. I may have spent 2 hours or so cleaning them but I wanted to make sure I did it one time. I wouldn't want to have to remove it since it becomes very hard. When the calipers were clean I gave them one final soaking w/ brake cleaner and allowed them to dry for about an hour. Then I mixed the two part paint and started to paint them. For the bleeder valve and banjo bolt areas I didn't even tape them off since I was able to use really small brushes. I didn't paint inside the caliper completely since it will never be seen unless the caliper is off w/ the pads out. The only person that will ever see that is ME, so it wasn't a big deal. I don't do things ghetto stlye w/ this car but some may call what I did ghetto since it wasn't totally covered. It worked for me an I'm **** about this car. The working time w/ the paint is like 4hrs so I figured I would be fine for time but I came close. When I saw how much paint came w/ the kit I was worried about having enough for a second coat...there was PLENTLY left over and I was using heavy coats. I did all four and then went back around and put a second coat on. Once I had the second coat one I went back and touched up little areas were the paint sort of leveled itself away from, like a few tips on the fins for the rear caliper. There were only a few TINY spots were that happened so don't think the stuff runs right off because it doesn't. I mixed the entire amount of paint and hardener and had half of it left. I would suggest mixing half of each since that is all that is needed. Then you can either use the rest later, give it to a fellow car person, sniff it drink it or whatever. If you mix it all at once you'll be looking rather quickly for something else to paint since there is so much left over. I ended up throwing literally half of it away in the end. Being as cheap as I am that was painful for me.
I did this in a garage w/ the heat blasting so that drying time would be as short as possible. G2 suggests waiting a few hours until you put the wheel back on and 24 hrs before you drive. I didn't want to risk hitting "soft" paint so I just let it on the stands w/o the wheels for the full 24.
The intial coat had me worried since it seemed almost orange but the second coat produced a BRIGHT red. A buddy was watching and made a comment about how I now have something else to keep clean. He was right! Now when I wash the car I'm in there w/ a soft brush cleaning them up since ANY dirt dulls the bright red. I have the NAPA Ceramix pads so I get very little brake dust but any dirt, dust, tar or road crap seems to find its way to my calipers. I don't have any pictures of the process and even if I did have a camera the pics would have sucked...with all the exposed brake cleaner and paint inches or feet from my face for hours in the closed HOT garage...hey maybe I did take pics and just don't remember. I have pics of the car w/ the calipers painted but it's somewhere on one of these MANY rolls of film I have yet to get exposed, sorry. I was concerned w/ the glossy red paint showing all of the casting marks and the like but it levels itself real nice. I am very happy w/ the way it turned out and would do it again, but this time w/ better ventilation. Eastwood sells the G@ kit but the place on ebay is cheaper plus they gave me a coupon for free shipping($8) on the next G2 order w/ them.
I can scan the actual instructions later tonight but I have no idea how to post it here. If anyone wants to do that for me let me know and I'll send it to you tonight.
Sorry if I bounced all over the place w/ the directions but I'm short on time right now. If I left anything out or if there are still unanswered questions let me know.

I think it looks as good as the ONE set of coated calipers that I've seen.

...and is a realtively painless application?

I could have dropped the car on myself and it would have been painless. The lack of ventilation was due to the fact that it was like -5deg outsdie and I wanted it to dry completely. The prep is important but will never chip, flake or fade according to the warranty the G2 offers.

Can I have the free shipping coupon? sure, email me your mailing address taformaul93@aol.com

I did mine with high temp engine paint from Autozone. Red Cutlass with Daytona Yellow Calipers. After putting a plastic bag over the rotor I sprayed some paint into a plastic dish and used a sponge brush to put 5 coats of paint on each caliper. When that was dry, I sprayed on 2 coats of high temp clear. The calipers have help up for about a year, but after this past winter they look kinda rough. This spring will be 2 years and I'm gonna have to re-do them when I fix my brakes in a month or so.
