vht nightshades tint spray

okay, i got my vht nightshades tint spray in today... and i used it today...

now, everything i have read, especially from afterthoughtsauto.com... has told me that the vht nightshades can be used on any light, and it will appear black until lit, in which case it will reflect the normal color. the only thing would be that the more you sprayed on the light, the less bright the light would be... that would be fine with me...

i used it on my spoiler light and my rear marker lights... and it looks great. it actually shines thru better than my aVs taillight blackouts.

however, i also used it on my turn signals. it looks great... right up until you light it up. instead of being orange like it should be... it appears red. granted, it is still day time... but i would think it would still look orange... cuz if it's red now, it'll be brighter red at night, right? that's not good at all. i'm really not sure how to remedy this problem... maybe brighter light bulbs, or some bright orange light bulbs?

i need to fix this problem asap. i'd rather not have to remove the tint spray since i don't have enuff to redo it. can anybody help me out?

I used vht on my taillights and they came out great. I've always been a fan of vht and I put it on all of my cars. Pics are in the link in my sig. As for your problem, either change the blubs or go the route of clear lenses. The clear lenses without any vht are very nice, or even a light coating of it to give a "smoke" look

afterthoughtsauto.com. don't spray it on your turn signals unless you want to have red appearance to them tho. it also definitely kills the visibility of your car. with blackouts now on my turn signals, rear marker lights, spoiler light, and taillights, i've realized that my car prolly isn't too easy to see at night...

it looks great tho. and, for what it's worth, it reflects enuff for any non-drunk person to see at night. the only real issue with it is just that it turns your turn signals red. so i'm going to be leaving it the way it is ( unless i get pulled over )... for about another 3 and 1/2 weeks. when i get paid then, i'll order the legit blackouts for the turn signals, so at least then the lense will be black but it will show a dim white color.

won't changing the bulbs to a brighter white just make it a brighter red? i don't think that would be too healthy...

i thought about changing them to an orange bulb... but, if memory serves me correctly, the initial problem was that the nightshades turned the orange to red when coated... so, i don't think that'd help either.

i think i'll just hold onto them until i can order the legit smoke lenses for the turn signals... when i get those, i'll pull these off and put some paint thinner on them. get the vht off them, and re-use them when it's time for inspection.

I would say get some electronic flashers and order some 3157 Leds in yellow and some 194's (the little push in) 4 led in yellow

Heres a site to get them

www.superbrightleds.com

That way you dont risk melting the housing by going with a higher wattage bulb

BTW you could also just get the white leds

Hope this helps

If you are referring to the blackouts RK Sport sells, then you aren't heading in the right direction. They will just make the visibility problem worse, and the color problem still may not go away. And to get a dim white light, you would need clear corners as well (maybe that's what you were thinking). The problem is basic - Orangish-Yellow Lense + Blackout paint + Yellow light bulb = Darker Orange color, not really red. I have the same thing done on my car. You aren't going to run into much trouble probably, but if you just don't like the looks of it, there are a few options.

You can:
•Put higher wattage hyperwhite bulbs in there. You shouldn't run too much of a risk with these in the stock housings, as they are better made than the aftermarket ones. This would increase the visibility of the lights, and change the beam color too. That wouldn't necesarrily make it a brighter red - it might - but not necesarrily. Why? Because the bulbs you have in there right now I am assuming are the stock style bulbs - completely clear, yellow light emitting 2397's/194's (or 3157 depending on your year...) The color of the light coming out of those is different, and has the yellow tint to it, so it could be exaggerating the red more than white light would.

•Take AW/whiteZ-28's suggestion and experiment with LED's - but I have heard mixed opinions on to whether LED's are actually brighter or not in cases like this. Some people swear they are blinding - some say that you couldn't see them on in a pitch black room.

•Or, you can do the black outs. Like I said though, expect your visibility to go down more (less light will come out of them), and don't expect much more of a better situation with the color. To remove the Nite Shades from your lenses, use Acetone, works like a charm, and very quick.

Good Luck.

I got mine from O'Reilly Auto Parts - about $8 bucks a can (and a small can it is).

the smoke lense covers i was referring to were the ones from yearone.com. rksport doesn't offer those same lenses for a trans am as it does for a camaro. from what i understood INITIALLY... those lenses were different... that they weren't actually lenses, but the entire housing for the turn signal instead. basically it was an amber marker with a black face and no amber. that way when you put the white light inside of it, it'd light up an off-white color as opposed to a ****ing red color.

i suppose before i get drastic ( especially before spending $50 on those covers if they're going to do the same thing ), i'll go up to the store and see if i can't find some different light bulbs for it. the crap part of it is that we'll have to sit outside and continuously try different ones until we get one that works or until we get tired. we'll have to sit out in the parking lot, and when one doesn't work... **** off the return's desk cuz we keep bringing opened packages of bulbs back lol.

we'll see what happens with a few variations. a regular white bulb, a hyper white one... orange or yellow... something. if all else fails, i dunn0 what i'll do. i don't really want to order some LED bulbs if i don't know for certain that they'll work.

if anybody has any more suggestions, let me know.

thanx.

tried a few bulbs around town... brighter clear ones and even some orange ones. no luck at all...

i guess i could look into those led ones... but i really don't want to spend the money on them if there's no guarantee that they'll work. at least the ones in town i could easily take back when they didn't work.

i'm still thinking about just ordering the smoke lense covers from yearone and taking the vht off my signals...

anything else you guys have, let me know. thanx.

illegalactivist, I completed that same very mod with the same problem as a result. I even got pulled over three times for having "RED" light up front which is illegal in NC. My solution was to get rid of them and I bought a set of APC clear turn signal lens.. which I like even more. They seem to match the front up a little more since all of the other lights are clear. Also instaed of putting all 4 bulbs back in I left the little 194's out to give it a little different look. But I left the rear marker lights tinted as well as the 3rd brake light and rear lights. Just a sugggestion. Hope all works out for you.
