VA front license plate elimination - petition link inside!

I found this posted on SLP web site from Jan 2003. I didn't even know there was a bill trying to get passed on this issue. I would love suggestions on how to get this thing pushed through and made into VA law. I have emailed the guy listed the web site. Maybe a petition?

Anyone else from VA like to see this so we could keep the front of our cars clean?

"I don't know how many of you this will interest, but for the second year in a row there is a bill in the Virginia senate that, if passed, will no longer require the front plate. If you are interested in this going through, please write your representatives. Last year this was defeated purely by the Virginia State Police because the bill was not advertised.

For information:

http://legis.state.va.us/

When you get to the site, type in SB1009 for the bill number."

I think they should remove the law. How many cops use the front license plate anyway?

Also do you have an email address I can send my remarks to? I looked on that site but didn't see anywhere you can email your representative.

thnx

It would be great if the law was passed, car looks much better without the plate. I had mine off when I bought the car, but put it on recently. I don't need any other BS reasons for a cop to pull me over.

That's what they aim for with the radar gun when they are trying to catch you speeding

So because you're breaking a law and the cop is following the rules, that makes him a JERK??? Honestly, some of you people make me wonder. You're breaking a law, so if you get pulled over, deal with it!! If you didn't want to get pulled over then just obay the laws, it's that simple.

Very true. It is a stupid law though. they are really enforcing it now in CA with the intersection traffic cameras. Although it is NOT a fix-it ticket anymore. It is now a moving violation $110 fine. Check the revised 2003 vehicle code. It is only 1 of the over 3,000 changes to the vehicle code for 2003. So be carefull.

I've owned the Camaro for close to 4 years now and never put a front tag on it. I got 2 tickets for it the first summer I owned the car but since then the cops haven't really gave me any trouble over it. They have mentioned it before at road checks etc etc but never wrote out a ticket. The T/A won't have one either... I guess if they feel the need to write me a ticket then I'll pay it. They're just doing their job and I am breaking the law after all No big deal but it would be sweet if the front tag wasn't required.

I personally seen that last year, and emailed the senate. I got a letter in the mail a couple of months later, saying they were sorry, but the VA State Police had somehow voted over it, and won. Saying that a front tag was a big help to them.

I think it is

All 3 of my f-bodies do not sport a front tag. I have been asked about it once at road stops, and no tickets were wrote, b/c I had the front tag w/ me.

Other times, I haven't had any problems. It sucks though. I REALLY think the VA Troopers could deal w/ it JUST fine.

I don't think we will ever win though

I will see if I can get an email address of somebody that will listen. I have rec'd responses from:

Melanie Rapp wrote:

Dear Mr. Jones:

Thank you for your email and sharing your concerns in regards to
SB 1009. As you may already know, SB 1009 was stricken by the Patron, Senator Russell Potts, Jr. in Transportation during the 2003 General Assembly Session.

From the perspective of Law Enforcement Officers in Virginia it is important for vehicles to have two license plates due to safety issues.

It is easier for a police officer to identify a vehicle that has a front and rear plate. It is also beneficial when driving through subdivisions where vehicles are parked on the wrong side of the street. The front plate acts as a reflector for oncoming traffic, which decreases the chances of accidents.
The views of my constituents are very important to me, so please do not hesitate to contact my office with any future concerns.

Sincerely,

Melanie L Rapp

Delegate, 96th District

Virginia House of Delegates

So I emailed Senator Potts with:

Dear Mr. Potts:

I wanted to know some background on the above bill. I was told that this bill was stricken by you during the 2003 general assembly session.

What can I do to get this bill passed into law as I am a proponent of VA moving towards one license plate on motor vehicles.

My reasons are as follows:

1. Front plate serves little to no use in identifing vehicles to passing police officers since you don't have time to read the plate number at highways speeds or any other speed above 35 mph. If the vehicles are on a divided highway there is zero chance of reading the plate.

2. The production of one plate, instead of two would save VA dollars which could be used for other worthwhile purposes.

3. If a police officer is in process of a traffic stop, he/she will be behind the vehicle where the rear plate can be clearly read and checked for problems with the dispatcher.

4. The front plate make the vehicle UGLY. Virginians pay a lot of money for their vehicles and take pride in the way they look and front plates just look BAD.

What I need to know is what kind of support is needed to get this bill passed (petitions, etc). I am a car fanatic and have thousands of fellow fanatics that feel the same as I do. I didn't know that this bill had even been proposed or we could have had more support for it when it came time for the vote.

Thanks, Michael Jones

He did not respond personally, but had this lady respond.

Lana Westfall wrote:

Dear Mr. Jones,

The Virginia State Police and other law enforcement agencies asked Senator Potts to pull the bill last year.

They feel it is helpful to them to have a tag on the front of vehicles.

Thank you for giving us your input, it will be passed along to the transporation committee.

Sincerely,

Lana Westfall
Director, Constituent and Legislative Services

I will email her back and see if I can get a person that Virginians can email to voice their opinions.

Sorry for the long post.

long post yes

very informative post yes

hope to pass this law soon. very good points made.

also here is one. she mentions that the plates are reflective. aren't the reflectors on our cars reflective? lol i know it sounds dumb but we have reflectors on every side of the vehicle. maybe not directly in the front but if a person driving at night can't see a huge vehicle and wrecks, that person shouldn't be allowed to drive at night, or at all. maybe they should also slow down so they CAN see at night.

just my 2cents
