Teach me about rims!!!

Can someone explain all the numbers to me? Or does someone have a site or thread I could read? I know my tire size is 235/55R but I have no idea what that means. And when it comes to rims..... they give you something like 185/45/45 55W with a 35 offset and 5 lugs. What the hell does all that mean? How can I tell if a certain rim will fit my car?

I had a misunderstanding about tires that cost me a little bit of $$ so I will share what i have learned .

the 1st number in a TIRE size indicates how wide the tire is . This is measured in meters ? i belive ??? example = 225 means the tire is 225 meters from the edge of the tire that touches one side of the wheel to the other

the second number is the % of the first number that is on the sidewall . ex if the tire is 225/40 then 40 % of the width makes up the sidewall of the tire

the final number is the size of the tire ex 17 = 17" tire

so if you have a 225/40/17 it will not be as wide as a 245/40/17 but if you have a 245/45/17 you could have a tire that is as wide as the 225/40 but it will be taller b/c 45% of the 245 is on the sidewall

clear as mud ? good

someone please correct this if i am tottaly off base here

if someone hasnt added this yet:
backspacing=how far from the lip of the rim that the hub is (6"+ for these cars is like a must)

16x8= 16" radius by 8" wide, stock wheel size
17x9= SS rim size
17x9.5,17x11 are other common sizes

My car is due for a set of new tires, so I've been looking on Ebay for a set of rims and tires. The following are just examples. So please don't say they would look like a$$ on a firebird.
These would NOT fit our cars because they are 5 lug 100mm correct?
This rim says that it can fits 5x100/5x114.3 bolt patterns. +40 offset . How can it fit both?? And what kind of offset should I be looking for??? Does it matter??

you are correct about them not working, one they really would look cheap, try to find some chrome or silver painted

try searching of AFS wheels on ebay, they have wheel&tire packages all the time

and if you like the whole black rim look:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33748

those wheels look pretty good on a car if you like them black, but the ZR1 style also works in sliver painted and in chrome, you could also look for the SS/Z06 type (10 spoke)

Will a rim with this size and bolt pattern fit a 96 Firebird?:

5-lug (5X4½). They are 18" x 9", +26mm offset (6.11 backspacing).
with these tires: 275/35 ZR-18, 87W

Also, what kind of offset should I be looking for?

When you order the wheels you need to request the lug nut package also

I just installed my TT2s and I went with a 275 and it gives a very good look ! it is very aggressive looking

At least go with a 255 if you have to buy new ones anyways

the offset from the factory is 40mm. that is for the 16*8 and the 17*9. as for the corvette rims, ther offset is 56m. that would put the outer edge of the rim on the inner edge of the wheel well. any time you ht a mudhole or a splotch of water in the road, or roadkill for tht matter, youwould need to clean the car. there are some afermarket wheels for the z06 rims have the 40mm offset and fit better that the gm wees. but tey aren't official gm wheels. also, you would need to get some new tires that fit right. on18x9.5 youwould nee either 275/35's or 295/30's to keep the odometer correct. most are over 200 a a piece.
