Swapping 97+ dash into 95 Z

I am sure this has been done, but how long does it take, and how much work is involved? What kind of parts would I need besides the dash??

Thanks guys,

This has actually been mentioned many times, yet only few have done it.

Im taking a different path and putting a 98 WS6 dash in my 94 z28. It will take you about 30 minutes to get all the old dash out. Then its a matter of putting the new one in the same way you took your old one out.

Parts you will need...
Since the new dash has different air vents you will need the air ducts from the donor car.

Along with that, you will HAVE to get the gauge cluster from a 97 TA or Z28 so the tach is correct. (only year the LT1 was on the new style gauges)

Your HVAC wont just plug right in, so remove your old HVAC controls (*****, shafts, etc) and put them through the new HVAC display.

The rear defrost button is now on your new HVAC display, but its seperate from the HVAC control wiring.

The hatch release is now by your left knee, its a matter of just extending the wire from the passanger side to there.

Your fog light control is now above the radio, again just extend the wire. Your old wiring will plug right into your light control located in same spot as before.

You'll need the a pillars from the donor car as well.

Good luck man.

The HVAC is the heater and air controls right? So for the HVAC all I need to do is use the old controls but run them through the new display, or do I just need to get a HVAC from a 97+ Camaro, and just use my ***** on it?

Thanks.

Oh, where are you getting all your parts for your swap, and if you don't mind me asking...how much is it going to run you??

I'm in the process of swapping a 99 dash into my 95. You need the newer HVAC controls, but all of your original connections connects to the back of them like original. The only difference is if the new controls have the rear defogger button, and you also have the rear defogger option, the 95 uses 5 wires and the newer ones only use 4. The small grey wire is no longer used. Having the factory manuals is a real time saver. What I have found is that most of the newer Camaro dash parts are what the Firebirds have been using all along. Hope this helps.

Would the new gauge cluster work with the old wiring harnesses? I think heard somebody say they needed to splice the wires together.

And also is there a way to set the Mileage to what you are currently at, with the digital display?

The way the digital odo's work is ....on a brand new 0 mile cluster you can set the mileage to whatever you want thru a Tech1 or tech2 . When the odo reads even a tenth of a mile that option goes away and the odo is locked . So you basically have to find someone who can get around that . I would have to assume also that GM has incorporated secrurity for tampering . So you may destroy the odo by tampering with it .

Does anybody know about the wiring harness? I just want to make sure I can use my old one before I start this project. I am pretty sure that we need to splice in a new one though, but I could be wrong....Anybody know for sure???

Thanks.

As long as you use the 1997 cluster only, it will work fine. You just have to redo the harness where the connector goes into the cluster. I had to buy a different connector part # 12065803 and use the different wiring schematics (my case 1995 to 1997) to reposition the wires in the new connector. The digital odometer works like a charm, it just starts at whatever mileage it was when it was removed from the donor car.

yeah, my car is an OBD-1 car, the gauge cluster connector for the OBD-II cars is different, and the wiring harness that is in the car now needs to be adapted the the OBD-II connector. Other than that is just a direct swap.

Where do you find this new connector/adapter? Or how do you replace it? I guess thats the only question left.
