SS hood, anyway to tell real or fake.

My friend knows a place thats selling a SS hood for a 98+ Camaro. He said it looks like the original, and they said it came off a '02 car. I have yet to see it. It's already off the car so I won't be able to tell if it fits perfectly. It has minor damage on it.

Are there model numbers on the hoods? Anything that will clearly mark it as OEM GM SS Hood and not an aftermarket clone.

Also the weight, he said its bout 45-50 pounds. That right for a fiberglass hood?

Thanks!

From another post:
"It has embossed into it on the underside towards the rear, right behind the ram air duct ...

Granted it won't tell you the difference now, but true SS and SLP's SS hoods will buckle if you get in a head on accident, knock-off SS hoods will dislodge and slice right through the windshield (and probably your head)

I have no idea where you're getting that info from Brian, i had an obiously aftermarket SS hood from RK Sport back on my 2000 and the worst happened. Head on with a 66 Mustang. The hood buckled and the only damage to the windshield (and my head or that matter) was from the air bags. Someone fed you wrong info.

My buddy has a 97SS and the only difference i can see between mine and his besides the overall quality is that the under side of mine is 1 piece. It looks like his is 2 pieces. I don't know if the newer SS hoods are the same or not.

Sorry, Grant, I should've been more clear in what I meant. I was talking knock-offs as in the real knockoffs... ebay kinds that are made by small companies and what not. RKSport, respectable larger companies are not what I would consider knockoffs, next time I'll remember to name every single hood company...

This is pretty good evidence that it is probably real. "SMC" stands for sheet molded composite. And the cars were made in Canada.

Dude, if you have a problem with me, feel free to take it to PM's as I'm getting pretty sick of seeing you criticize EVERY SINGLE post I've ever made.

RK Sport is a well known, respectable business compared to a shady, unknown guy making hoods in his garage and selling them on ebay. I'm sorry for thinking people were mature enough to understand the difference... I'll remember to spell everything out word for word since apparently pu12en12g is too immature to understand. To the author of this thread, hopefully you understood the gesture of trying to be helpful.
