To Spray paint SS rims or not?

I have a set of SS rims and I like the Gran sport (black with silver lip) rims more, I know I can have them powercoated but I also saw that some guys here were spraying them with a can,

Has anyone done this to there SS rims and how does it look ?

any tips?

and how do you get the lip to polish?

First...let me say that I think this is a bad idea. With that said, you would tape off the lip of the wheel and just spray the rest.

Did I say yet that this was a bad idea?

I agree... Not a good idea. It would be really hard to get the paint nice and even, without running. It would also be hard to find paint that can withstand the elements. Also, the paint may begin to dull after a couple washes and some hours in the sun.

What you can do is go ahead and paint them, then if you don't like it, take them to get them powdercoated. You might have to sand the old paint off, or the powdercoating place might be able to sandblast them for you.

I did this to my Z28 wheels with ZERO problems.. I just washed them VERY good, and let them air dry.. Then I primered them and sprayed with Krylon. I have not had any problems with flaking or anything. It's all in the way you prep them.. Good luck!

Go for it,i myself would paint them gun metal or another dark grey that almost looks black, but still cotrasts with the tires. or get some of that chrome paint, true itdoes'nt look asgood as chrome but it looks like you have polished wheels and haven't polished them for a month, still looks better than bright trailler park silver.

Paint in the can is very good, as long as you follow a good prep procdure like this one it will last as good as powdercoating. And ofcourse use good paint, and worry about primer, you don't need to bother with it if you sand. (The wheels already have paint so a primer is not going to really help) like someone metioned, dupicolor wheel paint is probably good.

procedure
1. remove wheels, wash completly with degreaser
2. sand lightly
3. clean again
4. blow off with air hose and dry with towel
5. mask off tire and area under cap, and inside of wheel with tape
6. follow paint instructions
7. replace wheels, the paint dries to the touch in 15 min.

yeah if yo don't have jack stands it will take 4 hours and then you can't drive for another five but it beats taking your tires off and spending $200 for powder coating and waiting a week with no wheels for your car.

I say do it. I painted my spare set of stock 10-spoke rims jet black with clear coat. Looks really good for a set of track tires.
