Shortening A4 shift tube

I plan to shorten the shifter tube as I have a shifter **** adaptor and Hurst pistol grip shifter. My questions:
1. How much can I shorten the shift tube and white shift rod inside the tube?
2. What should I use to cut the tube and shift rod?

Thanks!
Mike

I can answer #2. A reinforced cutoff wheel on a dremel. I am pretty sure you can take it down as much as half; you just have to make sure there is enough room for the handle if you plan on shifting all the way down to 1st gear.

This is one of my next mods, just got to find the time to do it.

I really appreciate the response, especially the links. I plan to do the mod this weekend so this info is very timely. I was thinking of using a small tubing cutter I have and then using a dremel to cut the slots; may use it anyway to start the cut lines. Sure wish I could remove the metal tube; would make this mod very easy!

Received my pistol grip shift handle w/ the activator button in the mail yesterday. Adaptor should be here today. Already have a boot installed. Will post pics when done.

Thanks again!
