shift boot alternative...

I was thinking about a subtle touch to the interior of my Z. Soon I am getting a B&M shifter and was thinking about replacing the shift boot with a plate with cut slots for the shift throws. Similar to what you would find in a Ferrari. With a black base plate and **** then the shaft would be chrome cause I don’t want the mod to stick out like a sore thumb within my stock interior… any suggestions?

here is an example

I have often thought of doing something similar but it seems like our cars dont have that long of a throw for the shifter. also there is more 'play room' in the nuetral point. I think it would end up looking more like a rectangle hole with a 7 notches cut in it. I think it would be a great thing to try though. I would love to see the result if you do come up with a working solution.

I like hearing people come up with different ideas like this for these cars.

Good Luck with it.

I know a couple people have tried it over the years, myself included, and it never worked out. With the handle attaching to the tranny the way it does it is really difficult to make a clean looking "gate" for the shifter to follow. The first place to overcome would be a custom shift handle, and even then I think you would be limited again, just by the mounting of it alone.

I'd guess most of the Ferraris you see with the gated shifters are rear engine cars with linkage shifters. With a trans mounted shifter you would have to account for trans movement.

Maybe try to put some clay down and drive around for a bit shifting hard and easy and see how it comes out.

Damn... I didn't think about trans movement... Which either means keep the boot or mounting the shift gate on the trans somehow, but I don't know how I could make it look right if I did.
