Shaving rear side reflectors?

My car is currently in the body shop and I'm constantly thinking of ways to improve its appearance. I saw the shaved reflectors idea in a magazine recently. My questions are, will it look good and is it legal?

Thanks for you input

It is illegal in almost all states to shave those now, but do what I did, take a piece of pinstripe, lay it down through the middle, and then paint it, Remove pinstripe, then clear over that. now you have a small 3/8" stripe for the light to shine through and it is legall and looks cool.
