red led lights for speedometer?
red led lights for speedometer?
would red be a bad light color to see the speedometer at night time? like would it hurt your eye? because i got the light blue glow speedometer and im gonna change it because it kinda hurts my eyes from how bright it is, and this is supposed to be for led lights in the back of the white gauges
Re: red led lights for speedometer?
I'm not positive, could be wrong, but I thought there was a blue film on the back of our gauges that makes it so the light is blue. You might have to remove the film first to get red light to effectively come through. Could be wrong, but I thought I read that somewhere. There's a site or two out there that have direct bulb replacements that have LEDs but plug into the bulb's plug... it'd be easy to change over.
Re: red led lights for speedometer?
I have red guages in my car, and I like them. There's a reason when people use red lights when working in the dark. It's not has hard on your eyes, and your eyes can adjust to the dark faster if you see a red light verses a blue or yellow. All I did was buy some 194 bulbs for my dash. I think I needed 7.

I bought Replacement Blue 194's From AdvancedDiscountAuto In Florida, you get two per package. Couldn't find 161 73 or 37;s But Got a Tip from the lady at the counter of DiscountAuto, and bought Stained Glass Paint. I painted My Courtsey Lights in the Door over the Buttons and Wow, Blue Lights on my door Buttons. You have to Coat them Three to four times to get the blue in it but WOW, now i can Color all my bulbs!!!!!!
You can get Stained Glass Paint at Any Craft Store!! Go Figure!

You could get Red ones by APC, they're in the stores at least for the 194's. other lights you're need to get the Stained glass paint, i would think. But Light them up before you put them in to make sure you get the color you want. I had to coat mine two times, but i am thinking of three more coats to get a nice shade of blue. right now with two coats, i get light blue.
Re: red led lights for speedometer?
there's a real good place i got all my dash lights from it's http://www.leds4less.com they have 194/161 led replacements that are wedge based. they have free shippnig too. they have a choice of i think five different colors(red, blue, green, white and yellow). i just changed my dash over to blue. the only thing is that you have to take all the old assemblies out and change the individual bulbs one by one. also you need to make sure that the changed assemblies are all in the right direction, b/c it's a diode, if you switch polarity they don't light. not a big problem, if they don't light just turn the assembly half a round. also b/c i chose blue i took my needles off and scraped off the orange coating on the underside then painted them white it's really awesome at night when everything is blue including your needles.
here's a pic of them lit up they are actually brighter than what they are in the pic
And here's one without them lit up and the white needles

and with red leds

the reds are really good, they are a lot more mellow than blue, but you can still see them fine , it just doesn't show up in the picture
sorry about the bad quality
P.S. despite what they claim the lights don't respond much to the dimmer switch... but when you have these lights you won't want to dim them anyway cuz they look so good

Re: red led lights for speedometer?
im thinkin about doin this on one of my weekends that im really bored.. so im curious, is there a chart or sketch or anything that shows exactly which bulb does what on the 94 cluster (i remmeber seein one awhile back but couldnt find it in a search)? and any recomendations on good bulbs? (i dont want led's)
Re: red led lights for speedometer?
You guys that get regular bulbs, make sure you buy stained glass. If you get the bulbs that are painted, the paint will eventually burn off and appear brownish in color.

. so the best thing to do is buy the normal bulbs and paint them with the glass stainer?.. ty for the tip, but does anyone know where this chart im talking about is? if i remmember right its a picture of the back of a gauge cluster and shows which bulb lights what
Re: red led lights for speedometer?
you can tell which light does what by taking the bulb out and holding the cluster up to the light and look through the hole
if you just want to light up the numbers it takes 7 bulbs, but you can also change your turn signals just about any color too, i used blue in mine and red works as well, there is a total number of 21-22 bulbs in the back of my 94&96 gauge clusters
