reason why Discount Tire sales would say Vette wheels dont fit on Fbods?

I was at work today and called our sales phone number to get a price on how much I would pay for a set of wheels, and they say they are for vettes only and wont fit my Trans Am? Doesnt sound right since many people have Z06's and C5 wheels

I had the same thing happen to me at Discount, when I asked for prices on tires for my C5 wheels (wide 5's). The guy told me he had 'personal' experience with 'ZR1's' on a camaro and he said the things stuck out two inches past the quarters and fenders. He went on to say "C5's use a 36mm offset, camaro's need a 50mm offset" No I didn't correct him that ZR1's were C4's. I just chalked it up to his stupidity and walked out.

Ofcourse I had to re-re-assure myself and went home and bolted the wheels up(without tires) to my car to check fitment....no problems.
I think 3rd gen fbod's, and C4's, and 4th gen fbod's and C5's are just too much for them to comprehend there....but chain wide?

On a side note, why don't any tire stores stock the stock tire size for the rear of a Vette? I've tried every one. Order Item only. Been told it is an odd size. Whatever, I see plenty of C5's around here. Just hope they never have to buy a tire.

Yeah don't mention Camaro and Vette in the same sentence, it gets them all confused. Just say you need wheels to fit a '99 or '02 or whatever Vette so they are sure to get it right. I've heard Jason D say though that 'real' Z06's do not directly fit a 4th Gen Fbod without some inner wheel-well modding, but I can't remember off hand. Just search on Jason D and Z06, you should find the post.

Hey Zack congrats on the car! You have probably had it for a while but then again I havent been on this board in 6 months, because my Camaro project was put on hold after I got ripped off for $1600 for some rims and tires. Anyways if you can get Z06 rims and tires for less than $1200 let me know, otherwise AFS is the way to go. Also whoever you talked to doesn't know what they are talking about.

Yeah, when I bought my Borbet Type Ts, I went tire shopping (before deciding on Tirerack.com)

I told Town Fair Tire that I had 17x9.5 wheels on a Firebird, and I wanted 275/40R17 sized tires, and to give me a price. The guy says, "Hold on, I don't think they will fit." He then checks a book of plus sizing conversions (I told him my OEM tire size of 215/60R16). He says that only 245 somethings would only fit, and that 275s would be too wide. I said that many Camaro and Firebird guys have these wheels and they are just fine. He says, "Look buddy, I've been working in the tire business for 20 years, they won't fit."

I then bought from tirerack, bolted them up...no problems.

That would have given me all the desire in the world to go back up there with the new tires on and ask him if he had a set in this size!

Actually, that is true. My buddy ordered some for his 94 Z, the actual chrome Z06 wheels, from Discount Tire, and they did NOT fit correctly. They had to machined on the inside. You can tell them they are for a Camaro, and they will machine them a couple mm's for you to fit. My buddy had to send them back, and have them machined.

HE was PISSED when he put them on though, thinking they would fit. It took them a week to machine them, and 3 days to ship them back.

It is important that you tell them they are for a Camaro. The rear end, ect. is different.

Good luck.

I got mine back in January of 2000 from Les Schwab and there were minor fitment issues on the rear. They had to a little grinding to the hole in the center of the wheels in order for it to fit over the dust caps, which are slightly larger than the front. The bump stops had to be removed, and a little more grinding in that area. Our stocks wheels have slightly different offsets in the from and rear, whereas on Vette's, it is the same all around.

the Z06 rims will fit our cars. Just get the front ones. Not the rear. & then what you do is you have to use a special tool to cut part of the lip off for your back tires. & they will slide on & of with out a problem.

It all depends on the offset.......OEM ZO6 rims have too much positive offset to correctly fit on our fbody's, the rims will be in too far and will either look goofy or rub...or both.

18x10.5 rims will fit on all 4 corners if purchased in a +50mm, +53mm or +56mm offset.

18x9.5 rims will also fit on all 4 corners if purchased in a +50mm, +53mm, +56mm or a +58mm offset.

Factory front 17" Z06 wheels will fit on the front and rear of an f-body just fine.
Factory rear 18" Z06 wheels will not fit on the rear of an f-body without hammer modifications.

You can buy 18" replica Z06 wheels that WILL fit on the rear of an f-body as they have the proper offset. You just have to specify this when you buy them.

As far as the tires go, don't use the words "Stock & Vette" in the same sentence. They will think you want the 'Run Flats", which have to be ordered. Just tell them the brand and size you want.
