My suggestion for night shots:
Put your camera in manual mode and change the shutter speed (or is is F stop?) to about 8", turn off the flash, put the camera on a level surface like another car or a tripod, and set it to a 2 or 10 second timer (if you have it) so you don't physically have to jiggle the camera by pressing the button.
The reason for the 8" setting, is because it will let a lot of light into the lens because the camera will leave it open for 8 seconds to collect lots of light. I wish I had an example of how this looks, but I don't online.
