Painting your seats

Painting your seats
I understand that our leather seats are merely painted leather. I further understand that a auto paint store could match the color of your seats and put it in an aerosol can so that you can paint over your worn spots, e.g. the lovely driver's side bolster that wears in the first couple of weeks.
Any insight on how this is done and whether it lasts longer than the origial pos?
Thanks

Re: Painting your seats
I bought my paint/dye from our local automotive paint shop a few years ago and painted light tan seats to a dark blue to match the interior of our 1990 CrewCab and they still are holding up great!
