Painting Smoothlocks
Hey guys, I didn't wanna add on to that really long "Trunk Smoothlock" thread anymore so I made a new one. Someone in the last thread said that you could have a dealer send you a tube of touch-up paint for your car, so you could paint the smoothlocks yourself. Wouldn't it be difficult to paint them without putting brush strokes on them? Am I missing something, or does anyone else think it would be easier to spray them with a can of touch-up paint? Also, does a clear coat need to be applied after to get the colors to match?

well, I just got my Smoothlocks last week (Thanks, Jason!) and painted them to match. I got a spray can of touch-up paint at the local Advance Auto Parts along with a can of clear. I am sure you will be MUCH happier if you spray it on, not brush it on. It was listed as Truck/SUV touch-up paint, but the codes matched, so it's the same thing. I put a couple of coats on, let them dry for a few hours, then put on a couple of coats of clear and that's it. They match perfectly. Don't have any pics yet, but they do look sharp!

I would definitely spray these, I think the lock would look better than the brush strokes. I think people might have been talking about buying paint to mix and spray themselves. if my car wasn't getting repainted (AGAIN!!) next week I would just use some good paint from a local auto parts store. Be careful of clear coats yellowing paint on lighter colored cars.

I would advise that you do not use a brush to paint them, use spray paint only. You should be able to go to an auto parts store and pick up your car's color in a Duplicolor and Plasticote spray can.
