Thumbs up Painted and Decaled my Calipers

I did this this past weekend and thought I'd post some pix. I'd say this took a total of 4 hours, but a lot of that time was just waiting for paint to dry.

The paint I used is Bright Red Brake Caliper Paint made by Plasti-Kote.

The decals are black vinyl decals I got from Fourth Circle Creations. The same guys who did my windshield banner.

After the decals were applied, I put on a couple coats of clear enamel to protect them and make the calipers easier to clean.

Thanks for the compliments!

This is a relatively easy thing to do. You will really save yourself a TON of time if you have a Dremel tool. Sanding the calipers by hand would take forever.

If you plan on polishing the calipers, you woudl need to spend a lot more time on them than I did, but if you plan on painting them, you don't need to worry about making them perfect.

Is powdercoating them better than paint. I'm wondering how long the paint or powdercoat will last? Yours look great.

Looks nice!

Here are a few pics of mine. Myself and the co-owner of Fourth Circle Designs www.fourthcircledesigns.com did them in my garage one day.

The entire project took us around nine hours to complete of which easily over half of that time was spent prepping the calipers (ie. cleaning/smoothing out the seams). We then layed down three coats of clear adhesive enamel (primer) followed by three coats of red for the calipers and three coats of black for the brackets. Next we applied the decals to the two front calipers and then put down three coats of clear coat on top of that. Once everything was dry we mounted the brakes and tires and I let the car sit overnight to dry good. They have all held up very well over several months now and are easy to keep clean (especially since the car is mostly a garage queen).

Powdercoating will be more durable than paint will, however I can tell you this, I originally painted my calipers back in 1999 and although they had a few chips in the paint, they didn't look terrible.

Powercoating calipers would be a lot of work. First, you would have to completely remove the calipers from your car (since they need to be stuck in an oven to cure the powder). Secondtly, you would have to remove all rubber boots and non metal parts from the caliper. I've never done that before, so I don't know how much work that would take.

In all, painting them can be done without actually disassembling the caliper or removing the brake lines. Its MUCH easier, and for a little less durability, I think I can deal with it.

I got my decals from the same guy that Siggy got his from, Fourth Circle Designs. The guys name that sold them to me was called Evilface. He also did my custom windshield banner. Pix in sig.

Yep, that's the guy who came over and helped me do mine. He's a friend of mine and fellow club-related member.
