Our instructions for painting your interior

We've recently received several emails asking how we painted our interior panels on the SS. I'm drafting up the web page which will be included when we re-launch our website in Jan. However, here are the the instructions for those of you interested Good luck and enjoy!

INSTRUCTIONS:
Doing your interior is very easy, however time consuming. If you have the patience to do it right, then you'll be more than happy when you're finished. Below is how we went about doing our interior panels. The extent on how much you do is up to you. We went the full route and took no shortcuts. This took us about 2 weekends. We could have done it in one weekend but were too busy to do that. Time depends on how you want your finish to look.

1) Remove all panels that you plan on doing. They are easy to remove. Usually they are held in place by either screws, clips or both. Take your time when prying them off. Sometimes some force is needed, but don't worry about that. The hardest part for us were the door panels on the SS. This was tricky. The door locks pop off. Just carefully pry it off with a flat head screwdriver. Once those are off, its straight forward in removing the panel.

2) For each piece, take 600 grit sandpaper and sand down as smooth as you can. When finished, take 800 grit and sand down even further. The material these panels are made of really do require the 800 grit to finish it off for that smooth texture. Without it, you'll end up with a surface that's partly smooth and partly bumpy.

3) Take some rubbing alcohol and cloth and wipe down the sanded part. Make sure it's clean. It only takes a few moments to dry, and air drying it is all you need to do. From this point, mask off any parts you don't want painted.

4) We got some quick drying primer from Pep Boys. Spray the primer on lightly so that there are no run-offs or thick spots. Let dry for at least 15 minutes. Continue to do 2 or 3 more coats to ensure the part is completely primered.

5) We used bright silver for our paint. We also got that paint at Pep Boys (quick drying). When the part is completely dry from primer, spray on the first coat of paint. Do it lightly. It really doesn't matter if its completely covered. You'll be doing at least 5-6 coats of this. Let dry for about 1/2 hour. If you leave it in the sun... it dries much quicker. The 5-6 coats ensure that the primer won't bleed through.

6) The final step required clear coat (also from Pep Boys). We did about 3-4 coats of clear coat. Allowing about 20 minutes in between each coat. The outcome was a shiny finish.

That's about it. You can go with more or less coats for each if you wish. The amount of coats we did, turned out awesome. When finished with a part, let it sit overnight prior to installing back into the car. This will allow for it to completely dry. Enjoy your new interior. Re: Our instructions for painting your interior

Just a thought, since I will be doing this to mine, as I have TONS of sand paper would it be better to go up to 1000, or what'd you think on the grit? Also I am gonna shoot the actual Black paint that matches the exterior of the car, and clear it also. So do you think I should get a High build primer just for a lil extra insurance, as well as what'd you wipe ur dash with now? Obviously I'll just be able to use my Meguiar's Final Inspection after a damp rag to get mine back to shine...
