Ok what do i need from the body shop store to paint?

I finally dropped 600 bucks on a good air compressor so now i can sand and spray. Rigth now im planning on practicing on my z28 spoiler and maybe even hood.

So as far as paint, primer, hardner, etc.......gimme a list of things i need(to paint normal stock color)

Also im worried about all the mixing of paint, hardner etc.... so if you could give me a quick run down on the mixing?

They can give you the mixing mesurements at the store you buy the paint at.

Here's a list of what i bought when I got painting stuff:

1) base color
2) clear coat
3)reducer for paint and a gallon of cheap stuff for cleaning your gun
4) clearcoat hardener
5) anti-fisheye
6) 400 grit, 800 grit, and 1200 grit paper
7) mixing cups (free usually) along with filter and mixing sticks
8) water and oil seperator for compressor

Dont take this the wrong way but if you dont know what to get at the paint store then I suggest dont paint your car. I took body shop class for 4 years. You have to mix everything, sand, and spray with the right settings. Trust me it's hard work. - mike

g another schooled body man give no advice other than not to do it.....

go for it don;t listen to nah sayers its no fun that way and you would never learn anything. i painted my car and did 3 stage paint to boot and it came out great. is it perfect no but it looks great all paint will have flaws but i did it 100x cheaper than any body shop and i had fun doing it.

as for the list above forget the fish eye reducer and get a good surface cleaner wax n grease remover and some tack rags. if you use the fish eye stuff you always have to use it in each coat of paint. if its clean you should never have fish eyes. keep silcone products away from you paint area always.

donlt forget a good mask made for painting. are you doing base clear system i would reccomend base clear as the way to go forget about the one steps stuff base clear is more forgiving. and you defiatnly need the mixing cups makes life easier.

Good results from painting are hard to get, even for a professional. That's why people will drop $5k to have someone good do it. I've tried painting a few times and I know I'm not good enough to paint a car. I can do a small surface without it looking stupid, but something like a hood or a door would make me go insane.

I would suggest practicing on some body panels from a junk yard or something first, at least just to get the color right.

Hey, I'm no professional painter, and I'll tell him the same thing. It would be better to practice on something of little value first. It might seem like wasted time, but when the paint runs or dries and has blemishes, you'll be happy it wasn't on your car.

if you are painting in the garage i would get a fan and prop up the garage door like a foot or so and get some cardboard to fill in the space in thh bottom. you could also get rolls of plastic from like home depot and cover the ceiling and walls, this will reduce dirt and also keep overspray off your stuff. i would also get the garden hose in there and keep the floor wet at all times. it will hold down a ton of dust. me and a friend painted 2 full interiors of our cars in my garage. it turned out great. hope this helps some.
