is this necessary?

i'm going to paint my calipers and then put on the camaro decals. i was wondering if it is necessary to put primer on the calipers first and then paint them (after cleaning them). what exactly does the primer do anyways? i just don't want to waiste my money on primer that isn't necessary to keep the paint on there. thanks for any help or suggestions from you guys.

Primer is supposed to bond the paint to the surface you are painting.

I didn't prime mine. I just sanded them down and cleaned them up really well. They seem to be holding up great too. I did mine about six months ago and they still look perfect.
