My duplicolor do-it-yourself spray bomb paint job
Re: My duplicolor do-it-yourself spray bomb paint job
Thanks Camaro and Led.
And the panels that were painted are...........
The rear bumper and the passenger side rear quarter panel. I also painted the plastic trim down each side of the car.
As far as the paint cracking, here is a before and after pic of the Iroc. The first picture`s timestamp is dated 4/11/2002, right after I painted the bumper. The second`s is 4/5/2003, 6 days less than a year later, when I decided to sell it. The new owner has not complained about the paint, although I haven`t been in contact with him for over a year. Keep in mind I did *not* prep the bumper properly on this one before I painted it, unlike the Firehawk. I also did not use clear coat, and this was a daily driver that sat in the sun on a daily basis.

Does it look like a high quality paint job in person? Anything looks good on an internet picture.

I just followed the same technique that a good body shop would. Strip the paint down to the bare plastic/metal, or atleast close. Use a high build primer if necessary and wet sand to make sure everything is smooth. Spray the color, usually 3 coats is enough for complete coverage, but I use 4 or 5 just to be sure I don`t go through when color sanding. I use 1500 for color sanding, and add just a little dish detergent in the water. After that, I apply 4 or 5 coats of clear. Once that is dry, I wet sand again with 1500 progressing to 2000, and then buff.

All `93 and `94 Firehawks came with those wheels. They are hard to find in the right size and backspacing now.

Well, I originally posted this thread last April. It will soon be a year, and I just took some pics. I was challenged in this thread to take some pics a year later and post them. I am starting a new thread with current pictures. Please check at the top of the appearance forum shortly.
