I'm going to do it!
I'm going to paint my bright red z to a black one. The paint is starting to show signs of blistering.plus,I like the look out a blacked out black Z.
Some questions for you>>>>>>>>
(1) how bad does black show swirl marks, scratches, etc?
(2)any kind of legal stuff I need to know when I change the color. My registration has it as a Red z. I aaaume that I would need to change this when I renew my tag??
(3)a friend of the family has his own custom shop and he has painted some pretty expensive cars and he told me that he would do mine for around $1000.00 How does this sound?? Thanks

Re: I'm going to do it!
$1000 sounds like a good deal .... unless he is only painting the outside black and leaving all of the insides red. then I personally don't think I'd do it. Looks pretty tacky when you open your doors or hatch and still see red paint. JMO
Re: I'm going to do it!
1) I've owned several black cars. They look KILLER when clean
Right now I haven't even washed the 94Z convertible in a while and it needs it. Still doesn't look bad though and doesn't show too many swirls. Black is more difficult to keep up but looks nice and is worth it IMO.
2) After I changed by black SS to yellow I got pulled over. Forgot completely about the registration. Cop asked if there was a good reason why my registration said the car was black! DOH! I told him I had it repainted and never changed the registration. He basically said "cool". I ended up asking them to change it to yellow the next time I renewed my tag.
3) $1000. That is dirt cheap. Most quality paint places that I know of charge $1000 MORE to change the color and that doesn't include the engine compartment
If they are doing the entire paint job in for that and are doing the jams, that's a heck of a deal for a decent job. My paint guy would charge around $3000 minimum to go from red to black and that is with no body work.

Re: I'm going to do it!
Once you go black you never go back...Black is beautiful...
I once had a blackZ (sigh) and sold it. Then I bought a white Z. I am planning on painting it black in the near future. What was I thinking?
It does look better if you keep it clean but that goes for any color.

Re: I'm going to do it!
Black is awesome but needs constant upkeep to keep it clean. I had a 58 Impala convertable that was black and I
spent lots of hours keeping it looking good. Seems everything shows up on black.
I am toying with the idea of repainting my Z Electron blue .

Black is awesome. Especially this one with a harwood hood yankin' the fronts:

Re: I'm going to do it!
I don't know about black cars. I'd get a midnight blue or something myself. More original and has some color to it, plus it still has that deep black gloss.
That said, my car doesn't show dust that much at all, I never really notice until I clean the car and it changes color.

Re: I'm going to do it!
I know what you mean about the rear getting dusty. Seems like as soon as I drive it,the junk is there. I have a frienf that has a white z,and I can always see stuff on his car,and I have another firend who have a silver one and it looks pretty good.

<hijacked> I had the same problem to. Not to push any advertising but after I wash the car I use the Zaino after wash stuff. It makes a super slick non-static barrier on the paint. I now literally go weeks without washing and have *no* dirt. Well, as long as I don't get stuck in the rain. </hijacked>
Re: I'm going to do it!
i like black (but kinda partial)
and i had my whole front end painted for free - hood and bumper and fenders- all aftermarket fitted ,prepped and painted... shop in town is best around and im pretty good friends with the painter... he was gonna charge 1500$ to do the front but after it was done he wasnt happy with fitment on the hood - so offered to give me for free or redo it all--- i choose free
but 1000 is insanely cheap for a complete change
