How would you wire this?

I'm considering as a little project to wire a switch to my tail lights that can shut them off completely manually, while still having the headlights in operation. Obviously the lights won't turn on if I press the brakes either. Think I could get away with it with some wires and a switch from radio shack? Or are there more things involved?

It can be done, but why would you want to do this?

Do you get tail gated?

Re: How would you wire this?

I just thought it could be useful not having the brake lights on at night. I always wanted to be able to use the brakes at night without having the tail lights flip on.

????

You must like Fix it tickets.

First dumb idea of 2006.

Why not tape two flashlights to your hood, and then just drive around with your lights off.

I think he wants to be able to turn them off when he's running from a cop. That way when he hits the brakes to turn a corner they want see it if there far enough back.

Just don't use your brakes when you're running from the cops and you won't have this problem.

When you have to stop, use your e-brake.

No, I have never had to run from the cops, but I know how to drive good enough in an F-Body not to use the brakes in a corner.

It's goin to be on a switch it will go from normal function to off and thats it. When the switch is on the lights function normally, when I flip the switch the brake lights turn off completely. Besides I think it could help me AVOID a fix it ticket

Re: How would you wire this?

Honestly I really don't know why I wanted to do this. I wanted something to do as a project for my Camaro something stupid and easy, this is the only thing I could come up with that I can play with a switch that actually does something.

Edit: A switch that doesn't involve nitrous or fans.

How about a switch the pivots down the headlights uncovering 4 .50 caliber machine guns.

Re: How would you wire this?

On your brake petal is the switch which activates the brake lights. Simply put your on/off switch in series with this one. Wont take much wire and it's already under the dash, plus your blinkers and parking lights would still work normally.
I try not to be judgemental, but this has got to be one of the dumbest ideas anyone has asked about, unless your involve in some kind of illegal activity, which is even dumber. If you forget you have them off your chances of getting tail ended or shot probably go up considerably.

Re: How would you wire this?

Um... aren't the brake lights a separate bulb from the running lights? Or am I wrong?

Re: How would you wire this?

How about an "interupptor" switch that is conveniently located that would totally mute your speakers when flipped. That way, when you are cruising with the radio blasting, and your cell phone rings, you can flip it, and go silent immediately.

That could be done with relays. A little home, but it could be done.
