How to strip down 'glass hood

The dOOd before me did an absolute terrible job when the hood was painted. Now it's fiberglass, so I can't use any type of solvent on it, or it will melt it. It was estimated at 3 hours labor just to strip the hood, let alone smooth it and prime/paint it. I'm on a limited budget and would like to strip it down myself. I've worked with 'glass and bondo and such doing custom car audio, and know i could do it, i just don't know how to go about doing it without killing the 'glass. Do i just use sandpaper and go to town until i get through the paint? I've got allll winter long, so if it takes forever, it takes forever, but i'd like to do the work myself. Thank you all in advance for any input!

Take care,
Tim
