How to polish stock valve covers?

I was wondering what went into the "art" or making the dull black valve covers bright and shinny. I have access to a sander and polisher. How do you go about doing it?

Thanks for the reply. Seems like an awful lot of work, even though I have those 2 machines. The valvecovers are very thin, can they ruin easily if you take too much off? How easy is it to get off the black coating...thickness? Thanks.

Have a wire wheel? It will take off the black paint in no time and you can waste all your time on polishing instead. It's what I plan on doing.

How long do you possibly have to polish these dang things to make them shinny. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I keep on polishing it with this white stuff on a circular table polisher and it still looks like a brushed "bright" aluminum...any help would be great.

Your stock valve covers are steel. I don't think you polish steel. You either crome it or paint it, you polish aluminum.

no wonder why they're not polishing. Oh well, I guess it looks better than black...to me. Z28SORR...I'm from the Wood too. Thanks for letting me know, I'd polish these things all the way through if you didn't.

I got a set of polished aluminum ones off Ebay a while back for just under $100 shipped. The bolt holes are counter sunk for the stainless allen head bolts that came with them. Also - they're taller than stockers. Muuuuch better looking than the stockers!

I did have to do some clearancing of the supports inside for my 1.6 pro mags with the dremel, but that was no biggie.

Just another option to consider

I can powdercoat them for ya in a nice bright silver. $40 plus shipping. An extra $10 to beadblast them first. Send me mail.
