I just need to know how many coats are on a factory paint job and an aftermarket paint job? Both paint and clear. Thanks.

1 of each from the factory, and it all depends on an aftermarket job.

Thanks Birdie. I'm just going with the same color, but adding an SS hood and spoiler. I just want it to last longer and not to do the whole "spider web" affect. He'll do pretty much as many as I want, but I did not know it was only 1 of each from the factory. Thanks again.

The way I see it, the longivity of a paint job all depends on how well you take care of it. I know a guy with a 40's Cadillac that has amazing paint, and it's original. Needless to say he has taken extremely good care of it. As far as how many coats of paint, it may make the paint job a little tougher because it is thicker and possibly stronger, but adding more coats is mainly to get a better look. However, from what i'm told you want to add as few coats as needed to get the desired look. If I understand it correctly, adding more coats, particularly of clear, is so that you can do more sanding to make the paint look as smooth as possible.

How many coats of paint & clear are recommended for a high shine finish?

I will eventually be getting my car repainted. I don't need a showcar finish, but I want something very shiny and glossy

My car was 2 base coats with almost 3 full coats of clear. (i say almost because they were all 3 light coats which probably equals out to 2-2/12) Then LOTS of wet sanding. Pics in sig.
