Question How diffcult is it to change a convertible top?

My stock black top one has spots all over it so it needs replacing. My car is white and when my car is repainted I'm going for the solid white look so I'm looking for a white top. I was wondering how hard is it to change the top itself? Also can anyone recommend a site that sells good quality tops? The prices the dealers are quoting me are outrageous to say the least.

Thanks

I typically tackle most projects on my car myself. However, I let a convertible top shop do my 94Z top. These aren't just buy em and stick em on... require cutting, stretching, pulling, and IMO some degree of knowing what you're doing. LOL! I have never seen or been involved with replacing one and I wanted mine done CORRECTLY so I wasn't about to do it myself... paid to have the pros do it. In the long run I figured that would be cheaper than having them try to fix my screw ups.

If you want a nice used white top I have one on one of my parts cars. Make a offer.

I did it the right way and also did it myself and saved over $500 off the cheapest quote I got from a shop . Since theres no way I coulda replaced the cloth on my top , I just bought an entire convertible top assembly off a 6K mile 2002 firebird ( $650 shipped from TAcreations ) and removed my vert frame and all as an assembly . With 2 people it was really quite easy . Take the old vert top and frame off and install the new one . You may need to slightly adjust your windows , I did a little bit . There are a few adjustment points with the frame too , but I didnt need to go there .

So is it something I can just learn as I go along or do I need to know what I'm doing first before I attempt it (as far as I know their is no "how to" when it comes to changing tops).

If you can buy an entire top like this (used one) then all the cutting/trimming/fitting has already been done and it should be a not too hard bolt in. I was talking about buying a brand new top out of the box. The new ones come with excess material you have to cut, tuck, and trim... a bit more of a PITA

FWIW , I had no clue what I was doing when I did it . A person who's mechanically inclined should have no problem . Just pay attention when removing the old assembly , and have lots of patience putting back in .
