hood paint matching problem!
hood paint matching problem!
I just had an oem ss hood installed on my 99 Z. The car is red. The problem is the hood color is lighter than the rest of the car. After painting the entire hood twice the paint shop said thats the closest we can do. I don't think thats acceptable. They said they have to mix different colors to get that color red. So thats what they did and it still isnt right. And you cant get a match by using the paint code becauses gm uses so many paint suppliers. Is this all BS or what? They said they could blend they hood color on to the fenders and on to the front bumper cover. I dont want the wrong color sprayed on my bumper and fenders just because they cant match the hood! Has anyone had a problem like this? Is this place just feeding me a line of s--t?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Well your car isn't really that old or whatnot....but many times they have to blend the paint onto the fenders and bumper beause it is nearly impossible to match the paint of an older car....
...especially if you don't wax as often because when your car is in the sun unprotected the paint fades much faster, thus altering the orignal color of the car....so that is why they have to blend the paint most of the time...it seems to me that you really don't have much of a choice if you want the car to look like it is all one color....or you could try another paint shop if you really wanted to...

Ive painted my quarter panel and I was amazed at how close the paint match was. I cant even see if for the most part, but sometimes in the sun and i stare really hard i can see the different tone of color.

They painted the hood AGAIN without blending it in with the fenders and the front? That's a poor business decision IMO.
If they had any clue as to what they were doing they'd know that red is very difficult to match, if not damn near impossible. After you brought it back the first time they should have realized that you weren't just looking for a quick "insurance type" paint job with the panels not matching. They should have IMO right there made the decision to blend it for you.... they didn't. So, I'd say, they need to paint it a third time and this time blend the fenders in.
If they quoted you a low price while knowing your car was red, that's their fault and they should eat the cost of the blending.
I don't think you should settle for the job you got. Tell them you want them to do it again but blend in the fenders and the front. Heck, to help sway them, tell them you'd like to have the entire front painted instead of just the top blended. Chances are probably pretty good you have some rock chips and bug damage that might need fixing anyway and this extra $$$ might ease the pain for them havng to do the entire job for free again. Or, just tell them to blend it if you don't want the front end painted again

The thing is the rest of the car looks like it just drove out of the factory. So I don't really want any blending going on panels that are like brand new. Besides the paint they used (both times) came out more of an orangish red not a dark red like the rest of the car. So if they blended it I would think you would be able to see the difference somewhere on the car. I don't want a car that is orange in the front and red in the back. Come on, if I can see the color difference while I'm sitting down at Taco Bell and the car is maybe 75 feet away from me ITS BAD.
As far as having it painted at a ford dealership (which I only did cause my gf works there so I could get it done cheaper) Those guys all learn to paint at the same places the GM guys do.
I would gladly pay 2 or 3 times the amount to get it right.

you should of had them blend the paint on the fenders and nose. I just had my hood painted on my T/A. When they gave me my estimate they told me it would be $650 to block sand and paint the hood only and he could'nt garrenty the paint to match and said for an extra $250 he would blend the fenders and nose for a perfect match. I did'nt even think twice. Its definatly worth the extra money to have the whole front end blended

If I were you I would go down to Pres Kool's new body shop and ask them what they would do with it. I am sure they have done cars like yours once or twice before. I have also had great service from them in the past, a hell of a lot better than my dealings with the Pres Kool stealership.
BTW, did you ever hear back from your neighbor about that work he wanted done?

J, Constructive critisicism ahead:
You forgot to mention that it was a Ford dealership that painted your hood. I don't know if their competency is capable of matching that hood exactly. Maybe the GM guys know something differently, like mixing the paint a certain way.
II think that after painting it twice, they should refund your money, or paint it again, since you are not happy with it.

Furthurmore, you should go check a good shop that specializes in appearance and paint especially, in your area. I'm thinking about shops that paint cars the mystichrome/ color changing colors would be much more likely to get it right.
