Help with center console

Can any one tell me how the shifter (automatic) comes out so I can replace the center console on my 1997 Camaro?

If you drop the shifter down to low gear and look on the front side of the shift ****, you should see a big black "staple". Get behind it with a flat blade screwdriver and pry it out just like you would a staple. Then the **** just pulls right up and off, allowing you to get the shift plate off. Pretty straightforward from there.

Re: Help with center console

I pulled the staple out and the handle still isn't budging. I'm afraid that the handle is going to break.

It will come up, it just probably has never been moved...try closing an adjustable wrench on the shaft just below it, and tap on the wrench from underneath. It's just stuck. Actually, if the staple is out, try giving the button a few good bumps, that should loosen it. Think of it this way....if the staple wasn't there, the **** would theoretically lift up on the shaft every time you pushed the button. Do this with the key forward so the shift lock doesn't interfere
