heat extractor hood
heat extractor hood
I am looking for a hood to help get heat out of the engine. I know mecham makes one that is very pricey and most say they fit terrible. Pretty much all of the hoods I see are none functional, but does that mean that any of the scoop are completly sealed. i just want the air to come in the front of the hood and be able to flow out the back side of another port. What do you guys recommend? Has anyone had any luck modifying the stock hood to have some type of extractor ports?
thanks

Re: heat extractor hood
if you are talking about the inserts in the stock hood, they are facing the wrong way to get heat out. Plus mine are already taken out completely and its not enough. I am also going to remove the weather stripping as someone mentioned to me, since the car will not be driven in the rain. I will just have to be careful when washing

Removing the hood rear seal allows engine fumes to enter the interior through the vent system. There are a few gasses in those fumes which are fairly nasty.
If you are trying to remove engine compartment heat, either dump it into a low pressure area or create one. Front wheel wells and side fender vents above and behind the front wheel come to mind. Those vents were functional in early 70's Tran Ams, or at least they could be made functional.
One of the functions of an air dam just in front of and below the radiator is to create a low pressure area just behind the radiator to help "suck" air thru it. It also sucks engine compartment air out. Removing that dam is not a good idea. Making it deeper mught be useful.
Re: heat extractor hood
Hmm. I removed the weatherstripping from the firewall on my GTP and had it that way for years. The outside air entered through the radiator and around the headlights and was then pushed out the back where the stripping used to be. By opening the back "seal", outside air would flow through the engine compartment, creating a cooler engine bay.
Re: heat extractor hood
the car has a stroked and t-trim and I think the blower blocks quite a bit of the air flow through which is created by from the air dam. Also because the car has a large fuel system and creates to much heat in the lines causing it to over heat. I know the fuel system is not the problem because i ran the car without the hood and had no issues. That is why i think getting heat out the back would be a big benefit.

Summit sells a ram-air style hood, the exact one I want for the exact same reason
. Gonna use a regular cai and leave the front "nose" open to allow air to come across the engine bay and out the back of the hood. Good luck and post any results, news!
EDIT search for part# HRD-B-12202

Exactly, removing the weatherstripping on the top of the firewall will allow this to work.
Re: heat extractor hood
chr15,
I believe the hood you are looking at is the harwood ram air. Have you been able to find out if the scoop is open all the way to the back yet? I tired looking around and havent been able to confirm this. If not I think I am just going to get the cowl version instead, although it would be nice to have the scoop in front as well.
