has anyone attempted to shorten the a4 shifter

I was thinking it would be cool to shorten the stick like 1.3 inches to give it a more sporty feel and look, but i would have to tear the car apart and do some cutting, idon't think it will be too hard and i'm going to try it but i was just wondering if someone has already done it.

I did it too. Looks SO much better. Then I added an auto to manual shift adapter so I could put any shift **** on. I bought a flameball, looks sweet!!!! It's real easy to do too. Just don't cut the white piece of plastic inside the shifter as low as you cut the outside metal. Leave it about an inch longer and trim it as you need to. Easy free mod. Looks better with the stainless shift adapter.

Yeah, that looks really good, i bet it feels much more solid to shift then the long shaft does too. Why doesn't GM wake up and do these little things right to begin with? Its acceptable that the shifter is a little flimsy to begin with but they could do this, save material and improve the looks and feel of it; especialy when they didn't bother to make a shifter boot. It's probably the same as the caviler , anyway next sunday, this will be my priority, I'll be getting stripes this week too but those will wait for this. thanks for the replies guys.

NO problem. Good luck with it. You'll love it!! As I said BE CAREFUL NOT to cut the plastic piece inside the metal tube or you will be screwed. Leave it an inch or so longer than the metal tube. It takes about 5 minutes. The biggest PIA is getting the shifter handle off. You have to pull the pin out of the leather on the back of the shifter, it takes a bit of work!!!

I don't have that adapter that you used so i guess i will have to recut the grooves for the handle pin and the slots for the handle alignment. No big deal though.

Oh ya, crap, I never thought of that. I guess it'll take you a bit more than 5 minutes huh??!! Good luck. It's worth the work by the way. Just don't go to low with it. Do a search, there should be tons of stuff. I know I started a thread or two a while back about this, however it had to do with the DMH shift adapter. Take care!

Damn man, that's a sweet-azz car you have there! Really, that's gotta be the nicest LT1 I've ever seen, IMO of course. Great car

I'm glad I saw this thread. I got my shifter adapter the other day was quite dissapointed at how tall a new shift **** would be with it. I had heard you couldn't shorten it, but was going to try anyway, so now that I know it can be done pretty easily, I'm ready to get started.

BTW, here's a thread I found while doing a search, that has a little more detail about it.

Thumbs up

Hmmmm...............shorten the shifter!? Never thought of that! Good idea!!!

Also, does anyone know if the shifter boot from A4 'Vettes would work on our shifters?? I imagine they're the same shifter, although the console may be a little different? Has anyone thought of / tried / done this?? I think it would look nice having a shifter boot.

I shortened mine. It seems like almost 2 years ago. At that time I made a post on here with a decent writeup. Only a couple of pics of the finished product though. Here's one www.z28roc.cz28.com/shifter1.jpg
