harwood hoods

guys I am struggling with something here. i think i have decided on a harwood hood. the main reason i am looking at a aftermarket hood is to get some heat out of the bay. I have been hearing mixed things about whether or not the cowl portion of the hood is open to allow air out. I know on the ram air version the front scopp is sealed but can easily but cut out. So the real question is the rear. I called harwood and they say its open in back but some of the pictures i have seen look closed to me. After searching it I have seen both as well. What do you guys know and if i do have to modify it how big of a deal is it? thanks

Re: harwood hoods

I have the harwood "ram air" show hood on mine, the rear is closed

Edit: Purchased ~4 months ago, not sure if they change them with time or if they do both and you get one randomly

Re: harwood hoods

same as above for me, quality of the hood is pretty nice though, only problem i had was getting it all lined up, but i also saw a GM hood installed by the same guy and it had the same fitment issues my harwood did lmao. needless to say when iget the car back ill take it to someone else to see if they can get it to fit right, and i think it can be done easily if the stock hood is just as off as my harwood. anyhow the harwoods are both listed as "show only" so non-functional.. maybe you can order them opened up from harwood directly but i havent seen one that way. ive heard it can be easy to open up the cowl side with time though. but i was also told by a local shop it was impossible because theres about a 2in. gap between the 2 faberglass layers in there in a V-shap to support the cowl *shrug* good luck though and iether way its still a sweet lookin hood =D

Re: harwood hoods

racingtinger,

I called harwood again and they told me this time that the cowl side is closed but could be easily opened up with a dremel of dye grinder. They just said you would need to make two cuts one of the outside and then on the inside as you said. They did say people do it all the time. I just dont want to by a hood and then not be able to make the cowl funstional. I am also looking at the vfn ss which they say is already functional on the rear and the dg motorsports zl1.

Re: harwood hoods

thanks i was beginning to think ild forgotten my own hood since i havent seen it in so long .. nice to know when i get it back i can open up the cowl like i originally wanted though =D ive been told before it could be done by people on this site i just know im gonna be cautious about it and do it in steps
such as one small hole on each side then keep cutting it out till its where i want it, then re-fiberglass to smooth it out now to get a dremel

Re: harwood hoods

I was told by a relative, cousin, of the owner of Harwood that they did the math and discontinued the SS hood. I was told the same thing by Jegs. If you guys are finding out different info PLZ PLZ PLZ let me know, Im planning on buying one pretty asap like!!
