'glassing something on the hood
'glassing something on the hood
I am looking at the U.S. Exotics warbird scoop on Ebay ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33646 ) and I was wondering if anyone had any idea what it would cost for a shop to fiberglass that onto a stock firebird hood.
Thanks!
Thanks!
I don't know if there are any decent alternatives, there might well be... but:
Fiberglass and steel don't mix well. Cracking and warping are almost always the case. The hood collects heat from the engine/sunlight and expands alot more than the glass. This causes the problems. On top of that, you will never get a flush look by putting the part on top of the hood and then glassing.
Once before I cut the skin off the hood, careful not to cut the substructure loose, in the shape of the scoop. This caused the scoop flange to set down on the substructure instead of the hood itself and made it easy to get a flush look. If I were to do it again, I would use flexible plastic filler, along with flexible paint and primer, to blend everything together. Fiberglass is just too brittle.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

You know they make that hood for firebirds right?

You know the Suncoast hood is different from the Warbird hood? For example, the Warbird hood is closer in appearance to the LS1 WS6 hood in that the scoops are done at an angle, where as the Suncoast hood comes to the leading edge of the hood and is level with the line of the hood. Also the Warbird's scoop vents are much cleaner looking in my opinion because they are cut to the shape of the hood and the Suncoast's holes are cut as rectangles, which if look at it straight on, I think doesn't look as good, almost cheaper looking.
US Exotics actually sells the complete hood too, but its $525...with all that work though it looks like I'd spend the same amount getting something glassed into the stock hood...
