dot matrix tint help please

I have the wonderful dot matrix on the hatch and I want to get tint in the next few weeks. I understand the only two options are to tint it and hope for the best or to use black vinyl over that section. For those that have the same glass what did you do? If you have any sort of close up pictures that would help a lot. Thanks

I'll see if I can get any close up pics for you (I don't have any right now, and am having problems with my digital camera). If I were you I would probably use black vinyl-I have't seen any cars with that done, but I wish I would of had them do that on mine.

The place that did mine used the Black Vinyl. It looks great, barely even noticeable.

I don't have any close-up shots though.

Erik 94TransAm - that would be great if you could get pictures for me of your full tint. If you get it to work could you please email them to me at taformula93@aol.com I take it you had the entire window tinted? Is it bubbling or cloudy or what?

97FormulaWS-6 - Did you use 5% on the rear? Where can you see the seam more, the outside or inside?

Thanks

I've got 5% Onyx on the rear.. it a black but at that tint level it's also almost a Mirror tint.

The line isn't really noticable for what it is. I've seen a lot worse if that's what you mean. The only other way to take care of the dots would be to paint over them.. not something I'd want done by a "tint shop"... let alone a body shop. Glass painting can be a pain.

The line actually looks like its supossed to be there, it's very close to the same style as the black edging of the window itself; a little more reflective though.

Have them tint the rear window and trim the tint at the line where the dot matrix starts. You can go to any local hardware store and by a can of krylon or brush-on window paint. Shouldn't cost you more than $2. Mask off the tint and body panels and spray several light coats till the dots are covered. Be sure to mask the off the car so that the line where the tint ends, lines up with the area to be painted.

Sorry, but my camera still isn't working. Basically, I have 5% tint on all my windows, and on the back it's dark, but where the dot matrix is it just looks like there isn't any tint (or a lighter shade of tint). It doesn't look too bad, but would probably look better if you put vinyl over it or bought that window paint.

everyone STOP...

when I got mine tinted I was warned and all that good stuff, however there is a fix! If you get a small rubber/plastic squeegie type of thing you can make it look good. All you do is have the tinit installed, and like 2 weeks later just use the squeegie and go through the dots in a diagonal. You dont actually go over the dots, but in between them making like "X"s This worked for mine, and it looks very good.

This works because some of the water is still on the tint, you're just pushing the air out from in between the dots, and resticking the tint to the glass.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I think I may have found a shop that will tint over the dots and promises that it will work. The only thing about this guy is that he will be doing the rear in two pieces instead of one like I wanted. He also promises me that the seams will be on the defrost lines and won't be visible. If it doesn't(work on the dots or hide the seams), he said that he will redo it no cost(besides the PIA of taking it back) so I think I will give him a try. I told him that I was extremely picky about my car and that if it didn't look perfect that I would be back and angry. He said that it was fine and he hasn't had a problem yet with doing them. So I took his first appointment on Feb 15th. I'll let you all know how it turns out. If I don't post on the 15th, that means that I am hunting the tint man!
Thanks again for all of the help, pictures and suggestions.

When I first went to get my tint the dude let the top of the tint hang till it was REALLY tacky and proceeded to use a bondo card to apply the tint.....it was STILL bubbly and bltochy at the top which I DID NOT like at all....the problem is that when you get closer to the edge of the rear window where the dot matrix is... the dots get closer and closer together.

This causes peaks in the area that the tint is suppose to cover....so it won't stick no matter what. The dude did a good job of covering the dot matrix but I was really **** about the blotchyness....so I had him cut the tint and I painted it. The area thats painted looks like the very top portion of the window where its completely black...so it looks like it came from the factory.

He won't do it in one, only two. Is the seam that noticable? If it is then I may just have a shop that can vinyl the dots and do it in one piece. For those with seams, are they noticable?

The seams with be noticeable to YOU...when you look at the window your eyes will immeadiately zoom to the flaws. Do yourself a favor and take it somewhere else.
