Disassembling side mirror

Unfortunately, I have to replace my passenger side view mirror on my '97. I already purchased a replacement mirror assembly from the dealer, but it's black inside and out, while my original mirrors are white inside and out.

Is there a way to safely remove the guts from the mirror assembly so that I can easily paint the inside of the mirror housing as well as the outside? At $100 a pop, I'd hate to break the glass.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Dave

Most body shops(I know we do) tape the glass up and paint it together. It won't look too bad because some white will blow in the edges and you really wont see any roughness or black. If you really want to paint the inside, you have to pull the glass out with a good hard tug. Removal is easy, putting it back in is hard. You will have to snap it into a cross which is made out of cheap pot metal. You can do it if you want to, I have done it, but we prefer to just tape it up and shoot it.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just leave the glass in place.
