Corvette C5-R with Hella 90mm's ! ! !

Photo:

Well, I didn't give the Hella 90mm headlight housings alot of thought until today. I just found out that both the Corvette Racing C5-R and the Audi Le Mans cars use the Hella 90mm housings.

This is enough to convince me to try them with my HID setup this season. (If it's good enough for 24 Hours At Le Mans, it's good enough for me)

The only remaining concern I have is price, so I will be running clear headlight covers to protect the expensive lenses, and I will be looking for the most inexpensive supplier.

Definatly...

However, we need to make some sort of a mold to hide everything around the light. Then have the clear headlight covers molded to the bumper cover a little better than just using the 90* locks.

Update:
Here are the part numbers so that you can run H7 bulbs in the H& version (vs. H9)

"Note that they use a 5 digit P/N here in North America, where in Europe they use a 12 digit one. Which means that if you look for the exact same H7 low beam projector, you should be asking for P/N 1BL-008-193-007. And I think Puma phone (800) 333-7862 is the only one "gray" importing H7 Hella 90mm to USA."

68136 90mm High Beam DE Module, H9 bulb
(SAE compliant)

68137 90mm Low Beam DE Module, H9 bulb
(SAE compliant)

68139 90mm Xenon Low Beam Module, D2S bulb
(SAE compliant)

68142 90mm Fog Lamp Module, H9 bulb
(SAE compliant)

68143 90mm Low Beam Module w/position light, H7 bulb
(ECE - available only in Canada)

Exactly, except I am going to still have the covers themselves removeable, sealed but removable (replaceable).

Here is my first concept photo:

we told ya!

the 90mm and 120mm have been in use for some time. the place i bought mine from goes to American Le Mans races to deal with the hella lights used there. these lights are performers, you won't be disppointed!

I guess I should have told you that right away.... I could have saved myself some convincing!

BTW, I noticed that you are contemplating using the H7 version of the 90mm's. On one of the sites that described all the different versions (I linked it somewhere in that post I started), it says that the H7 version is the longest. I would just like to point that out to you, as the H9 is already pretty tight and you will need some extra room for the HID connector, which is pretty big compared to an halogen one). When I mounted my low beams (H9), I had only 1/4" left behind the connector! I guess you could always bring the whole housing forward some... but then you risk to run out of length on the mounting/adjusting screws....

I should probably start writing some text to go with those pics!

moving the lights forwar some could look good. those pics of the car had the lights and they had like a surface under them and it looked good. like ours if u moved them forward some it would look sealed too with a surface under the lights.

Yeah, I guess you could move them forward more, but then you will have to do a LOT of cutting to the stock bracket. You probably might as well make a custom bracket to mount the light on, because after that much cutting you won't be able to to go back to the stock lights anyway and the bracket lost all its rigidity. Not trying to discourage you or anything , just making you aware of some problems you will encounter, so you can think about the solution ahead of time

Guys, Does Sylvania make Silverstars in either H7's or H9's? I hear a lot of talk on this board about guys putting in 9005's and the lights being a lot brighter. But I was thinking when I do the Hella 90mm conversion, if Sylvania made a silverstar for the H9 how much brighter it would be.

Sam, do you think a H7 Silverstar would be brighter than your ones you have in your 90mm now? Oh ya, thanks for the pics last week.

I am not too familiar with the Silverstars. I've found out so far that the H7 is about 27 lumen/W and H9 is about 30 lumen/W (OSRAM brochure). So for the same wattage, the H9 gives a little more light, but not much. The standard wattage for H7 is 55W and for the H9 it's 65W, but overwattage H7's are easier to find.

That's what I found out so far.

Well, here is YET ANOTHER supercar with the Hella 90mm setup.

It turns out the Saleen S7 uses them as well :

I'm thinking about using these lights on my trans am, have a question though, do you think i should use the low beam or high beam for the fog light area? The high beam light looks more like a standard fog light than the low beam one does. It's also alot shorter/smaller than the low bean one is. Are there any lighting diagrams of these lights in use? so that i can compare the high and low beam patterns? Any info is appreciated. I'm ready to order now too...

You can check out the thread I started on this. I also took some pics of the lights on my car and the road illumination, those are linked in the thread mentioned above.

About your question what to put in the fog light area: that depends on what you want to achieve with the lights. If you put high beams in there, you'll have to turn them off each time someone else is coming down the road...

I am putting together an install page (for Camaro tho...) and should be done soon. If you want to know more, post or email me!
