Re: Converting T-Top to Hardtop

Hmm, I like the idea of the carbon fiber roof for weight reasons I may have to check into that. I am defiently going to have to do some thinking on this one it looks like the hardest part would be finding a good roof to work with.

Thanks for all your help guys and if you have any more ideas feel free.

No offense but I think its plumb near retarded to make a custom carbon fiber roof, because of the weight savings of like 4 lbs. to save... The cost differenence is in the hundreds, possible thousands.

Save the money go buy a lightweight carpet, have a new carpet, likely better weight savings, and save a few hundred.

Weight reduction is nice but sometimes the money spent to do one thing is better spent on other things.

I agree it is money that would be better spent in other areas, but one of the other members EvilZ28 said earlier that if you buy the roof seperate from GM anyway that it would be $500+. I haven't personally checked but if that were the case then the $425 carbon fiber roof would be cheaper than a new roof from GM. It would be cheaper to buy a roof from someone who had removed their hardtop to convert to T-top but the odds of getting one without a major hack job is very slim. I really was just posting this question up to see if anyone else had either done this or was planning it to see what I may go through. I am defienetly going to have to do more thinking on it because I have some other plans for this summer but I am seriously thinking about doing this one when I get the car repainted.

Re: Converting T-Top to Hardtop

Do a search on here for 'Camaro Parts Manual' and check for posts by shoebox You can download the complete parts manual for your further parts needs. But until then, here are the part numbers you would need (all prices found on gmpartsdirect.com );

10253596 - Hardtop Roof $379.09
10282725 - Roof Rail RH $18.80
10282726 - Roof Rail LH $18.80

Those are just the three main pieces. There were TONS more listed in the diagram. If you download the manual, check in Group 12, Section 15; '93-02 F87 Sheet metal - Body part 2 - Door & roof' Hope this helps! If you need more part numbers, let me know. I've got the Firebird Manual as well. 99% the same parts, but a few different items. Later,

Wow, Thats a really good price on the roof. It lists out for $642.53. Gm must be marking up the crap out of it. Cool that you found it for alot cheaper. Wonder what shipping would cost on it though.

Re: Converting T-Top to Hardtop

gmpartsdirect.com is the BEST place to get genuine GM parts for almost wholesale prices. But barely any parts are actually listed on the sites built in catalog. You have to get the pn and look stuff up to find what you need. I've gotten so much stuff from there at great prices, it's not funny. I don't like spending tons of cash if I don't have too, and I know ya'll don't either, so I like to pass on my money-saving secrets to fellow members. If you need anything else, LMK!

Thanks for the Part #'s I never even thought about looking on shoebox's sight. That should make thinks easier than i was thinking it would be. I have the Firebird/TA Helms manual I will take a look in there and see what I can find. Thanks again.

Re: Converting T-Top to Hardtop

Remember guys, the weight savings of carbon fiber is comparing the CF roof to t-tops, where you save closer to 20 lbs...

Actually we did a comparison on that...

We had a few people weigh in some of the stuff that they cut off vs. the stuff that was put back on...

They are very close in weight. We think the biggest difference in weight is the weatherstripping.

Re: Converting T-Top to Hardtop

It's REALLY easy to convert the car you own from a t-top car to a hard-top.

Step 1) Put an add in the Auto Trader or on E-bay for your highly sough after M6 T-top car.

Step 2) Take the money and buy a hard top car (plenty out there).

Step 3) Spend the extra money left over from selling your car on more mods !

With as many people with hard-tops out there wanting to convert to t-tops you could probably find someone who would trade you even.

If you were to convert it to a hard-top then convert it to a REAL hard-top and stick a sheet of metal all the way across.
