Console Question..

..and no, i am not asking if i can put the newer style in my car, because i know i can.

What i want to know is, could i put a 6 speed console in my car even though its an automatic, and buy the kit where you can put a 6 speed shift **** on the gear selector along with a leather boot.

Becuase if i could, that would be really cool..

and i don't think it would matter, but its a 1996 Trans Am.

x.

Well I don't know if this will help but I know a guy who did that to his LT1 Corvette (don't know the year exactly, 94?), so I know it can be done. It looked good, I thought it was a stick, until I actually saw him shift.

The only problem you may have is the positioning of the manual shifter vs the auto shifter. Doesn't the manual shifter sit further forward than the auto shifter?

You can always try it, and if it doesn't work, you can always sell the console. There is always someone looking to upgrade (like me!).

Let us know if it works out!

yea thats the only thing i'm worried about, was the fact that the 6 speed looks like it sits physically further up than the automatic, Granted its not like i've ever put it in a gear lower than 3, but if the situation occurred where i'd need 2 or 1, i'd like to be able to get it that far withouth havi ng to pry the top part of the console off..

oh and where do you get the adapter for the shifter anyway, i can't remember.

Consider if you do this, you will loose that lighted display that shows the posistion. think that thing is cool and loosing it would suck. i think you should concentrate on finding a way to just shorten the stock shifter, that would be sweet. I would even keep the stock TA shifter because it's pretty cool too.

i don't mind loosing that, i know the order is P R N D 3 2 1, And for the first month i owned it, the lightbulb was out, and it never lit up at night anyway. The climate control light was aslo out when i bought it, and that was annoying at night, thats one thing i couldn't live without being able to see, but the shifter's position, wouldn't bother me.
