Changing out interior to red...have questions
Changing out interior to red...have questions
I plan on changing my interior from Tan to Flame Red. I going to try and find the flame red seats but i know they are rare so if I couldn't find them I was going to buy used set of grey seats and dye the middle red, I would also need door panels. What I was wondering is do you think it would be cheaper to just buy 2 tone leather (and would I be able to put leather on my cloth seats now)? I was going to paint all tan plastic pieces, does anyone know if you can paint them the stock grey interior color and if you can what color is it called? Suggestions are greatly appreciated since I have to figure out how much this is going to cost and start planning my budget soon.
Thanks,
Mark

Funny you should ask that. I started doing my interior in my 86 Z-28 2 days ago. I'm changing it from tan to gray, the plastic pieces were factory tan so I went to the local Advance auto and bought a couple of cans of gray #410 vinyl dye (dont get regular paint) They came out so good everbody on my block wants me to do theirs. Here's what I did for a proffesional look:
1) take all pieces to be sprayed out of the car carefully
2) wash em with soap and water, then de-grease them with a good de-greaser "simply green" is what I used.
3) let them fully dry (paint wont adhere to wet parts)
4) Spray a light 1st coat (you'll still be able to see the old color through the 1st coat) and let dry (10 minutes)
5) spray 2nd coat and let dry (this should do it)
6) spray a clear coat over pieces
If you did it right they should look better than factory. I'll have pics of mine up as soon as I'm finished. Hope it helps

Check out http://www.katzkin.com
They make leather upholstery kits for the aftermarket. They follow the factory patterns and do a bunch of different colors and embroidery. You can install them yourself and they look OEM. Check em out.
I heard about these on that show "Trucks!" on TNN

hey there man,
I just painted the interior trim parts to my 2000 Z28 and I gotta admit that it looks pretty good, or at least I like it. I bought some special paint at Pep Boys. called VINYL COLOR. It is special for interior plastics and trim parts and vinyl. The color I got was FLAME RED 420. It works really well and blends in with the texture of the plastics. Makes it look natural. If you do get it be sure to read up on the instructions for appllying it cuz its not your regular spray paint. It takes a several coats and a some patients but trust me its worth it. OH and if you have recentley applied armor all you have to wait some time before spraying the paint. I will try to get some pics up so you can see my results. Hope that kinda helps.
