I'm sure whoever painted that car wet-sanded and buffed it out, as it looks to be show quality.
Even if you are a world class painter, clearcoat can have a small "ripple effect" when dry. Thats why showcars and bikes are wet-sanded and buffed (or color sanded as its more commonly called).

As far as what it cost- If I were painting it, I'd charge somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-8000 bucks depending on bodywork and prep. I get 3 grand for painting H-D sheetmetal with 3 color Tribal or flames.

Whoever painted it did a great job though- from a painters standpoint I always appreciate a nice quality job.

Geez you're expensive! I can get that done for $2000 the most! Matter O' fact, my car is about to get painted a nice Triple Black, looking like GLass!

Yeah in these economic times, I don't think a platinum paint job is even worth 8 grand, unless there is ghost flames involved.

It depends on who you know, if you pay 8 grand for a custom paintjob, that's about 5 grand too much, and you need to make friends with some hot rod guys.

Hmmm..maybe in some places..but almost any reputable place that specializes in custom paint won't even look at your car (or truck) for less than 4 grand. Theres A LOT that goes into a paint job that is first class show quality..the first is labor. The second is the materials.
It costs roughly a grand in materials alone to paint a whole car, if you use top-notch stuff like PPG, Dupont, or HOK. Then you have the prep work, and DETAILS like removing everything on the car that would otherwise be taped up.
I (and the custom painters I know) also remove doors, trunklid, hoods etc to refinish everything. When I'm done, theres no break lines, or stopping "areas" ..everything is re-done to appear like a factory job. Its just better, and has graphics
Thats time, and labor..but it makes the paint job. You also tape up and cover wheel wells, underbody, etc so that there isn't overspray all over the place. Then add in more time you have wetsanding and buffing..and there is a correct way to do it. I use a finish film system that leaves no swirls, or sanding marks. When you wash your car, theres no worrying that the glaze that most shops use to hide those imperfections will wash out leaving you with- yep, a paint job with imperfections

I won DuPonts Top Gun award in 2001, and have worked with several top name painters in the country. It is who you know for sure, but I have yet to find an accomplished painter who will do a custom paint job for 2 or 3 grand.
Thats just me though..if you can get it done for that, by all means more power to ya. Thats what its all about!
